In a press release issued on Friday, Firaxis Games, developer of the Civilization and XCOM series as well as the recent Marvel's Midnight Suns, announced several personnel changes and revealed that a new Civilization game in the works. Heather Hazen, who joined Firaxis as COO in 2020, will be taking over the role of President and Studio Head from Steve Martin, who held the position since 2006 and had been with the company for over 25 years. Hazen previously worked as an executive producer with Epic Games and Popcap Games.

Jake Solomon, director of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 and Marvel's Midnight Suns, has also left the studio. There was no mention of what this means for XCOM, though Solomon did mention in an interview with VGC last month that he's not aware of any plans for XCOM in the future. While Firaxis has pledged post-launch support for Midnight Suns, it's unclear if this is referring to the four DLCs announced before launch (that Solomon worked on), or if anything will be coming beyond that.

As for Solomon himself, he has not said what he will be working on next, but his departure announcement on Twitter strongly implies he will not continue working in the tactical RPG genre. "I loved designing tactical turn-based games, but it's time for other, smarter people to push that space forward," it reads. "My brain is on fire with a new dream."

Finally, Firaxis confirmed that Civilization VI creative director Ed Beach will stay in that role while developing a new entry in the series, though no more details were given beyond that.

Though 2K insists it parted with Martin and Solomon on good terms, the restructuring of Firaxis comes at an interesting time for publisher 2K. In a recent interview with gamesindustry.biz, CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed the company's poor financial performance and emphasized the need for efficiency. He also disclosed to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg that Midnight Suns in particular was a commercial flop, partially putting blame on the game's release window.
