Ugh... how you are surprised, people? DID YOU READ THE DISCLAIMER when you updated it? It gave you the option to turn them off.

ALSO, it gave you the option to turn off wifi altogether to avoid this whole mess.

And it's not talking about firmware updates; can you imaging the trouble they would receive if it automatically connected without you knowing in the middle of a huge FW update only for you to be "passing by" home or the hotspot and have it disconnect? FW brick much? Obviously they can't force you to update the firmware and if they are doing any such thing, it's just updating my fucking Pokedex app with new pokemon.

You guys worrying about this... shut up. Stop scaring people. Nothing bad is going to happen if you read up on shit before you MANUALLY update.

/thread

ummm that wouldnt happen because it downloads before it installs. if it doesnt finish downloading it doesnt install. nintendos servers got hit hard during that update. we would have seen bricks if auto updates actually did what you suggest it would do. thats just not how a 3ds would work even with forced auto firmware updates

this sir I didn't know seriously! I will have to find the switch only had it 3-4 days and honestly I didn't read the manual. Will save the battery as well I assume.

Is there a way to TURN these off? If so can someone please document the steps needed to ensure we don't autoupdate ourselves to brickage.
Settings - Internet Settings - SpotPass - Automatic Software Downloads and then select No.
It said it will only disable unimportant updates

You misunderstood.

It implied you cannot disable "important" updates

I have auto-updates on.
Tried eShop just there, it's saying there's a system update.
I haven't been automagically updated via spotpass.

Also, new update?!

same here.. it looks like it downloaded updated by itself but only when you try to enter eshop it asks you to install it :S

QUOTELatest System Update and System Feature Update:

June 15, 2011
Nintendo 3DS Menu 2.1.0-3U

Included in this update:

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments to enhance user experience

A correction for the screen freeze symptom experienced in the Ridge Racer 3D game

You can receive automatic updates when a wireless internet connection is available. When the download is complete, you will receive a dialog on the HOME Menu detailing the steps to install the update

It didn't automagically update at all.
I had to go and download it myself.
You had a download progress bar too, right?
