Rockstar Games apologise for GTA Trilogy issues, relist original versions

Rockstar Games have a today published a newswire article in which they apologise for the launch of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

The trilogy has been met with resounding criticism, mostly in regards to the visual changes made and unstable performance across most platforms as well as various bugs and glitches.

Rockstar Games go on to say that the new collection "did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect" and to reassure people that updates to the titles are in the works.

In a surprise move they are also planning to reinstate the original PC versions of the 3 titles to the Rockstar Games Store. No word on whether they will also become available again on other digital storefronts or not.

Hi everyone,

We want to provide an update regarding the unexpected technical issues that came to light as part of the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Firstly, we want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has encountered issues playing these games.

The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world. The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect.

We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.

A new Title Update is on the way in the coming days for all versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that will address a number of issues. We will update everyone as soon as it is live.

In the meantime, it pains us to mention that we are hearing reports of members of the development teams being harassed on social media. We would kindly ask our community to please maintain a respectful and civil discourse around this release as we work through these issues.

While one of the goals of the Definitive Editions was to allow players to enjoy these games on modern platforms for many years to come, we also understand that some of you would still like to have the previous classic versions available for purchase.

We will be adding the classic PC versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas back to the Rockstar Store shortly as a bundle. Additionally, everyone who has purchased Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for PC from the Rockstar Store through June 30, 2022, will receive these classic versions in their Rockstar Games Launcher library at no additional cost. We will update everyone as soon as these are back in the Rockstar Store.

Once again, we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we work through these updates to ensure these games meet everyone's justifiably high standards.

Sincerely,
Rockstar Games

It was half assed and lazy. It means nothing as they knew the game wasn't ready. Just because someone apologizes doesn't mean it's worth anything. Especially not if it was intentional.
Seems like the assumption is that whoever wrote that apology:
1) Was someone in a position that could've made the calls that would improve the games
2) Wasn't actually sorry about it

Which..... you could be right. But it's still an assumption. It could have been by someone who had no control over the situation and truly is sorry.

All this could've been avoided by not removing the originals/shutting down mods and the reverse engineered ports.
Just for a comparison, other Rockstar games that got a remaster never got this treatment.
No argument with that.

I cant really say ive witnessed any bugs yet but saying that i am still at the beginning of gta3 on the switch trying to find more codes.

But from what ive seen so far on the switch, its a very shit port likely again thanks to cheaptendo hardware the game has been dunmbed down that much.

Textures look low resolution, draw distance is terrible, the last time i played a game where cars would pop up right in front of you to the point you'd risk hitting it head on was gt64.

I dont understand why they would allow a third party studio to take its games and make it all cartoonish like the sims, when gta games tried to look somewhat realistic as with the hardware backt then.

The studio needed to make up their mind, do we make the game models look like a kids cartoon, but use somewhat realistic looking environment textures and lighting, relfections, shadows been in realtime.

In some parts the game looks pretty well polished and then you get out of your car and its like wtf is this crap.

Controls are pretty terrible too, no improvment on vehicles how they have no weight in the world and can tip if a leaf hits you.

But i could probably see the graphical changes may look better on the ps4/xbx1 with actual high resolution textures and models.

The switch version, like tony hawks has been dumbed down way too much and should be called the definately dont edition.

But lets see if these bugs gets fixed and ill consider buying it on ps4 or xbx1.

But i cant believe fans are outraged by a R* logo aparently not been right in the game, there is a pool shaped as the R* logo.

The idiots go to the measures of numbering the star points. 1, 2, 3, 4 and saying where is point 5, your game sucks you cant get your logo right.

Am i the only one that can see the fact that if you were to draw around the R* logo and dug a hole to make a pool and filled it with water, you would not see point 5 of the star.

If you took the R* logo and painted the inside all black you would not see point 5 of the star, the only reason you see point 5 is because the R is black and the star is white.

So your seeing the outline of the logo, bet that guy feels like he has achieved something by going to social media slagging them off for getting their logo wrong, when in fact its not, your seeing an outline of the logo.

I was pissing myself when i was reading it on some gaming site trying to find any crap they can to publish a click baite article to jump on the gta riddled with bugs bandwagon.

Im like wow, is this all you have and you class this crap as content thats news worthy.

I only read it because i needed something to pass the time while taking a dump.

Since they are only re-adding the classic PC versions back to just their Rockstar Store, this means they have control on when they will be removing them in the near future and to stop anyone from playing them once the Trilogy gets more patch up work done. Also, I highly doubt they will let people work on any graphic mods again for those classic versions.

To put it simply, this apology means nothing to me.

No argument with that.
Whoever wrote the apology is more than likely a community director or some submember of that specific section. Doesn't change the fact that it's an apology from the company. The one person who wrote that lazy message may or may not be sorry. Doesn't matter. It's the whole company.

Yeah, that's true, the games obviously weren't in a good state when they released. Some companies really gotta hire more play testers.

Probably one of my favourite things to happen from this mess is Vargskelethor Joel drinking so much Sprunk, it broke San Andreas' game files.

According to game journalist, that's a 65. lol! Game that crashes and breaks over random as fuck reasons, and also has rain that makes the game near unplayable. lol

This is a 75 according to gbatemp

I was a huge fan of the whole GTA series going way back to the first GTA 1 demo on PC before the full game even came out, but at some point it lost all its hype for me. I mean I even liked Chinatown Wars but I can't even be bothered to play GTA V now if it's free.

Nothing lasts forever. It was once the king of an exciting new genre but now it's just a vessel for online purchases. The next game will be centered around this, and it will be just another in an over-saturated genre, but with a style of writing that stopped feeling fresh about a decade ago. It's already over. This whole trilogy fiasco only confirms what we already know.

If you cared to look at the review and not just the score you could literally see the rain effect in San Andreas not doing whatever the heck it's doing for others. All the crashes and glitches and freaky crap appear to be happening on pc and switch, anyway. The review was for ps5.

5 hours of footage and 20 hours of gameplay across three different games, and some bad faces and wonky hit boxes were the worst of what I saw. I can't speak for other people's experiences. I can't speak for other platforms either.

People love to rage and be mad at people finding something tolerable and scoff as if it's a bad review and take major offense. Especially people who don't bother to actually try things out for themselves and just parrot others opinions.

It was a lazy port. Gamers should expect better. Rockstar should be doing better.

But it's darn well playable and runs well on console. I dare say it's even fun.

Whilst this looks good on the face it, Rockstar were well aware of the state of the game before launch, despite this they removed original versions and continued with the release. They are the equivalent of EA/Konami/Activision now, if not worse.

They've fallen from such a great height, it's close to impossible to build the reputation and capability they had, the reputation they can never recover now (not to the standard they had). The GTA V 1, 2,3 and 4 (GTA V V re-re-re-releases), constant low quality cash grabs, etc.

I just want to inform you that this is also a problem in the original versions. Something like this happened to me twice on PC recently. Seems like the game doesn't like you to get fat by using vending machines excessively.
Ohhhhh right, I see. Actually, I think a few glitches I've seen in the DE have actually stemmed from the original versions - for example the one glitch in GTA 3 that makes your car as wide as Jay Ohrberg's double wide limousine if you do some steps and then wiggle it.

video taken from twitter

You would think they would patch these out, though...

When time & money is an issue I can see why people don't bother to try things out for themselves. That's what reviews are for. So they can try it for you and tell you if it's worth wasting your money on. This game getting flack for its performance and graphics, I can see why people don't waste their money to try it.

Can you turn that shit-effect off? Just looking at it gives me a headache.

Rock star and Grove Games ought to be ashamed of this "definitive edition" of GTA.

Not only are they playing the victim, they're doing the bare fucking minimum too stop the backlash. They are only putting the originals back so people will buy the originals out of fear of them being removed again. Look at T2 stock; it's down! T2 is desperate for money so they pull this shit lol... Rockstar man, what happened to you... for shame

Rockstar should be ashamed of themselves!
Why they didn't include the most talented modders and include fans to be apart of these old loved games..
But no created so many enemies and released a pile of dog crap!!
I didn’t even pay for the trilogy on my CFW switch and I even feel robbed
