I decided to mod my Mega Drive Mini, is there something more than games?

I decided to mod my Mega Drive mini (european version) and I wanted to know if I can use it for other things too aside from gaming
In particular I would like to know if I can put a photo viewer in it and also if I can change / add more backgrounds (the artworks displayed while you are playing to fill the empty spaces in modern 16:9 screens)

just install retroarch. it has the ability to do 16x9. hakchi is compatible with at least the genesis mini.

here's mine (yep, mega drive is in there under a different list of games):

Thanks but i don't want to stretch the image,I actually wanted to use custom artwork, but if it is not possible the original backgrounds or just black borders are better than stretching.

I use Retroarch on PC and there is a core to view pictures, so that means I can use it to see photos with the Mega Drive Mini console too I guess, right?

Thanks, I can't wait to try it!

There is one more thing that I'd like to know: do you know if Doom 64 runs fine on it?

I have heard that Nintendo 64 emulation is possible but many of those games just don't work.

I am undecided if I should put it on the mini console or not. I am a big fan of Doom 64 but I don't want to stray away too much from what an original 16 bit console is supposed to be... (in the collection of games I mean - I know that a 16 bit console is not supposed to display multimedia content either but this is a different thing)

I like really a lot Doom 64, Mario 64 and Paper Mario, but I think that it would feel wrong to play them (expecially Mario 64 and Paper Mario) on something that is supposed to be a celebration of 16 bit generation...

that I don't know. I only put the full usa set of roms for the genesis on mine. I don't like playing games on the wrong system, so I did the same with the nes, snes, and psx minis.

I understand, I have only the Mega Drive mini because it is the only one that I really liked enough to buy it, but there are a few SNes games (expecially Super Castlevania 4) that I really like a lot and I intend to put them in the Mega Drive too. Most of those games were not even included in the official release of the SNes mini. I want to put in it only games that I like. I don't want a "complete collection" with too many games that I don't care about, or even worse I just don't like.

personally, I think the pc engine/turbo grafx 16 mini did the best job to get most of the best games on the system compared with the nes, snes, genesis, and psx minis. I own one of those. I don't know if it's hackable, but the only game series I'd add is valis (especially valis 2), but there's not really much beyond that that I'd add.

I don't know, most people say that the Turbo Grafx 16 mini is great and I'm sure its quality is very good, as far as I know it was made by the same team who made the Mega Drive mini, but I'm not interested in those games. I have tried some of them and none of them was particularly appealing to me.
For my taste the Mega Drive is by far the best one, expecially the USA and Europe versions, I have seen the selection of games in the Japan version and I was shocked, maybe japanese gamers have a different taste but to me that selection seemed unconceivable.
I consider myself very lucky that at least for USA and Europe they have decided to include Sonic 1 because I know that in general Sonic 2 is very popular but I really dislike it, and Sonic 1 is my favourite instead.
For my taste the Mega Drive have always been the 16 bit console with the best lineup, but the SNes was very good too and the SNes mini could have been a much better alternative with a better selection of games. For exaple they should have included Demon's Crest and King of dragons, just to name a few.

yep, it has it, but I don't know how to use it, never have:

I have just modded my console, I have used Project Lunar because I liked the interface more and the option to choose between Retroarch and the original menu everytime I turn on the console.
But I cannot find this core anymore. It is unavailable when I search for Mega Drive mini cores and I can't even find it anymore for PC either! It's so weird, expecially the fact that even on PC it is not available anymore. I can't understand why. :(

I have deleted Project Luna and tried Hakchi instead. I don't like the interface too much but Hakchi is more useful, works better and can do anything I could ask for.

As far as I understood most recent Retroarch versions can display images natively, Project Lunar gave me various problems trying to do that but with Hakchi it works perfectly. I can also use my own overlays when I use Retroarch, I can make folders so finally I was able to separate my favourite games from all the other ones, overall it seems to work much better.

I reallylike it!
