Sony announces next-gen PlayStation VR headset

Sony has revealed that there will be a successor to their PlayStation VR headset. Announced in a PlayStation Blog post, the new virtual reality hardware will make use of the PlayStation 5’s power, and will feature a new and innovative VR controller that takes inspiration from the DualSense. It will also have improved resolution output and a higher field of view than the original PSVR, while only requiring a single cable to connect to the PS5. No release window was provided, though Sony confirmed that the next-gen PSVR will not release this year.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

Anyway, makes me wonder if they will just include VR with the console, when VR gets widespread enough.
Probably not. No matter how widespread VR becomes, a VR setup will always be an expensive accessory. They might introduce some "VR plus" bundle but the basic console will stay gamepad-only for a while yet.

Considering how powerful the PS5 is, it's the appropriate time for VR to kick off. Trying to run VR on the PS4 was a big mistake, it's just too weak.

And beat saber ps4 game that run on ps5
Psvr for ps5 would support only ps5 games, read somewhere from sony

That's only if they try to sell the most expensive headset with it, right? By the time this happens, shouldn't even low end VR be decent enough?

As for the gamepad, they should have been switch to motion controls even without VR.

but..why would they get rid of most of their exclusive developer companies based on VR. I wonder if there be even any games provided for the new PS generation

Actually I'm glad they tried, cuz it'll help them learn from it and make the next one better.
For example them simplifying the connection with a single cable. Hopefully they do away with the whole processor box entirely as well.

Nice to see they aren't giving up on VR, especially since Sony has that feature all to themselves in the console space right now. If they take a bit of a loss on the HMD and controllers, they can be very competitive even with PC VR.

If they dont ditch the stereo camera and the blue leds for another positioning system (such as IR matrix like the HTC Vibe...) it doesn´t matter how much they improve the PS3 move controllers or the displays...
absolutely this
the friggin camera cord does not even reach my TV even with the added expensive extension cable and you are limited only one extension cable for the camera , like 13 feet max
i can't even use the thing , because everything is wall mounted and built in so i have to make a huge mess on top of the already huge mess of cables by unhooking my system and also unhooking the switch dock sitting in top of it and moving it across the room and have cables running up the wall to the TV for the stupid camera with the PS4 , PSVR processor box and shit ton of cables running all over the floor to trip over
my TV is wall mounted and i have an HDMI cable running up inside of the wall to the attic and down again to the AVR which is sitting in a built in wall shelf on another wall , all my system a connect to the receiver and sit in the in wall shelf , the camera and the inflexibility of the mounting option because of the cable make it a nightmare to use

Not really. You don't want to ship your flashy, ultra HD, 8K, cutting edge console out with the cheapest VR setup you can find, it sends the wrong message, and
b) even the cheapest setup will still have to have a decent headset, VR controllers, and motion tracking, and it will never be cheap-cheap, and definitely not as cheap as just a console on its own.
Same reason why you don't see them selling TVs packaged with the console. This doesn't count :ha:

Hmm? Kinda interested.. Still I do love my oculus quest 2 atm.. & with rumors of it getting a big update soon I'd probably stick with it... But who knows... It's got me thinking that with Days Gone coming to PC I wonder if PsVR will have decent exclusives in the future & if they would hit pc... I.E Hitman 3 is a VR exclusive to Playstation... ( was looking forward to trying it..).. But still haven't gotten a chance...

Ugh wired!? An oculus quest is still a better deal unless they sell it for 150 and can be used as a PC VR device easily.

Wake me up when standards are done and games I will want to reference back in 10 years from that point are reasonably commonplace.

Having 19 different DRM encumbered (for no good reason either) setups and no games beyond the occasional tech demo does not make for fun times. Eventually it will be good but I am content to ignore it until then.

While I get your point, I wasn't saying they should literally put in the cheapest VR headset (of that time). Just a good, but not over expensive one. People that want the highest VR experience, well, they would get a PC.

As I said, "VR controllers" should have already been standard. VR or not.

I'm glad that they are doing this.
The quest 2 already boosted VR userbase so a new console VR that is almost on par with PC VR can only be good for VR.
We will have to wait for more info but i hope they manage to have a decent tracking solution this time around lol.
