I was able to upgrade my switch from firmware 9.0.1 to 10.0.4 using choidujour. However now when I have my sxos dongle and microsd card inserted I get a black screen when attempting to load both CFW and OFW from the sx main menu. When I turn on the switch with no dongle or microsd card inserted I can boot into the standard switch menu and browse everything I want.

So I put the prior firmware onto the SD card and inserted it, as well as the dongle, and the same result occurred. So basically I have a switch that can be used perfectly fine by itself, but not with the dongle and microsd card. Interestingly I can't even use the microsd with no dongle inserted.

So my question is what exactly is the issue with the dongle and card? And how do I go about downgrading my console firmware without being able to use the dongle or microsd card. Much appreciation for any help with this.

Have you got the most recent boot.dat etc on your sdcard

I’m not getting a boot.dat error screen. So I’m not sure if this advice would fix the issue. Can’t find the file to download anyways. Can someone please dm or post a link to where the newest boot.dat is?

These two things have nothing to do with each other. You will always be able to use a dongle. Either your sd card or dongle is broken.

Alright just found the boot.dat file. However since the micro SD card can have its contents read by my computer wouldn't that confirm its working just fine? And with the dongle I'm able to load to the SX OS main screen. If the dongle weren't working wouldnt it be incapable of doing that?

Test your micro sd card. Just to make sure. Is it correctly formatted?

Just downloaded the boot.dat and it worked. Thanks so much for the help guys! The instructions I used yesterday, i think on the SX forum, mentioned nothing about needing to use the newest boot.dat file to upgrade firmware.

In the process of thinking I potentially bricked my switch it was turned on and off over and over again. Hope I didn't do too much damage to the unit. Thanks again :D

PS: hopefully down the road we get an sx dongle that doesn't require the power plus button combination to start. A one and done fix, without installing a chip, would be great.

Glad you got it fixed. Just for future reference; you won't get a boot.dat error unless the boot.dat is missing. However, you will need an updated boot.dat whenever you upgrade your firmware; they normally come a while after a new FW is released so don't early adopt until you know an updated boot.dat is available that works.

Also, Autorcm circumvents the need for the power+volume combination, at a cost of having to always have your dongle inserted to boot the Switch, even into stock.

Really? So if I keep autorcm on I can just turn the switch on without the power volume combo? Are there any downsides for autorcm in terms of console reliability or being prone to bricking?

I'm kind of pissed with the user at the SX OS forums who put together the firmware upgrade thread. It didn't mention a thing about needing to download a new boot.dat file. Just out of curiosity if the console is bricked will it have a blue screen? Or are there are forms of bricking?

Pretty much, you won't need a jig or a button combination, but you will always need the dongle in, without it the Switch will no longer boot, at all. You can remove it as usual after boot. Not really any other downsides, possibly running out of battery while in RCM mode I guess.

To my knowledge there are also pink and orange brick screens, and also there will be a good old black screen brick.
