Hi there,

I have got hold of an unpatched switch and want to install Atmosphere CFW.

The main goal for me is to have a switch that can play pirated games on mainly downloaded from PC if HGB store is risky. Obviously I want to do this as safe as possible by playing offline. However also having the option of still being able to play purchased games online on the OFW.

What I'm wanting to know is if I should update the orignial firmware of the switch from 4.0.1 to latest. Would doing this affect me from installing CFW and what advantages from 4.0.1 do I miss out on.

I'm asking this because I've heard it's impossible to play certain titles online whilst using outdated OFW.

I also want the switch to have 90 DNS on the CFW.

Am I right in saying SysNAnd is OFW and EmuNAND is CFW.

Any help such as a link to a usefull guide would be great, the last console I installed CFW to was a PSP so I'm very outdated on this.

PS: Due to COVID I can't get a RCM dongle JIG quickly to inject the payload so will have to do this via PC everytime which isn't a problem until I can start leaving the house again. I also do understand that hacking my switch will always risk in a ban. However I believe that following the correct procedures is a way to eliminate any potential ban.

Most of this is correct, but just know that modding of any kind has the potential to result in a ban, no matter how careful you are. There are no guarantees. You can update safely as currently the big 3 CFWs support 10.0.2 (Atmosphere, ReiNX and I think SX OS does too). HBG Store runs on Tinfoil which currently requires ReiNX and that means you can't use a emuMMC (emuNAND) and increases the risk for bans (I think SX OS is supported too but it costs money so isn't ideal). If you really want to pirate games, I'd recommend having a seperate SD card so your pirated games don't load on OFW as I'd assume that'd be a fast ban.

Also, not sure if you understand but a emuMMC is simply a copy of your SysNAND which stays on your SD card. This means that anything that happens on your emuMMC won't affect the SysNAND which will stay completely stock as you should only run the SysNAND in the OFW which could increase the risk for bans if you don't do.

I would leave the sysnand on 4.0.1 and create a emunand and update that and only ise cfw on the emunand

also i use incodnito on it (emunand) so it protects your consoles serial number and 90dns setup too

Hi mate thanks for the reply does that mean I shouldn't play games on OFW from Internal storage but on a SD card separate from CFW I'll only be playing a couple of games.

If I was to do that wouldn't that not allow me to play online from OFW for many games?

I'm somewhat new to this, but you can safely update to the latest OFW if your switch is unpatched.
Make sure you have a clean backup before proceeding with the CFW.

Jig-wise, you can go with the paperclip or the foil method, but best to get a jig in due time.
Anyway, once it has been setup, you may not need to use the jig often unless you're bouncing between OFW and CFW.

With the latest Atmosphere, IncognitoRCM has been integrated through the exosphere.ini setting, which you can download from the github main section. Implement 90dns for extra precaution or even just flight mode.

Not too sure on how purchased game saves are integrated with the CFW side of things, but I'd say to keep these on your system memory where possible, as the CFW/EmuMMC will be on the micro sd card.

I followed a video tutorial, but thereafter looked towards reddit to figure out the rest of the stuff.

NSP installer, I'm using Goldleaf because it works fine on my macOS.
You might also want to include JSKV, switch-time, and ChoiDujourNX as some useful homebrews.
JSKV is for save file backups, and some save game mods/event activation - see here, https://gbatemp.net/threads/noob-friendly-guide-ac-nh-easter-event-manual-unlock.561530/
ChoiDujourNX is for updating FW on your CFW partition - note that if you're planning to upgrade, you should update the CFW files first before the Switch FW.

Hope this helps.

do u care about fuses (downgrading)?

u can update to the latest fw for online play but never load cfw on sysnand to keep it clean.

make a backup of original 4.0.1 and current firmware u want to update too after its been updated so u have a clean nand with current logs

If you want to have better exploits, your best bet would be to stay on 4.0.1 on your SysMMC and just create an EmuMMC for CFW stuff. But if you plan to use RCM for the rest of your switche's life then there's no point staying on v4.0.1.

Tbf was planning on following this nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/?
I think that guide is the one I used when I got started. It's not too bad and will get you going with some basic stuff running on the Atmosphere CFW. The problem with that guide is that it doesn't show how to install sigpatches for running games and with some recent stuff that happened, it's not as easy to get working sigpatches for Atmosphere compared to ReiNX and SX OS which have them built-in. It's still entirely possible however and someone called HarukoNX started to create new sigpatches for Atmosphere, but I personally haven't tried them for longer than a few minutes so I don't know how well they work.

why though? is it something frowned upon on, or just not allowed? idk, anyway it was helpful for me since it had things like the loading times and whatnot included which was reassuring.

for the sigpatch portion, there's a few threads out, but i've just stuck with the fusee-primary one, have not really ran into any other issues on that.

Video tutorials are outdated the moment they are uploaded and are not uploaded by any reliable people. Video guides have plagued this scene since its inception and have even caused consoles to become bricked.
