Japanese ratings board CERO announces temporary shutdown, may cause game delays

The gaming industry is about to feel another impact as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Japanese video game ratings board, the Computer Entertainment Rating Agency (CERO), has announced that it will be undergoing a temporary suspension of business, due to the state of emergency declaration in Tokyo. This means that any upcoming games that require an age rating to be released in Japan may not receive one, as the agency has stated that their workers are unable to do their job from home. The closure is set to last one month, starting on April 8th and ending on May 6th. Japanese publishers mention that while this won't impact games immediately, it may affect titles that are scheduled for release in 2-3 months, as companies usually apply for a CERO rating for their game a couple of months prior to release.

It's a shame developers won't be able to release their games digitally because of this. Oh yeah I've got enough games in my backlog to not worry but still, I feel for the developers getting what seems like an unnecessary obstacle.

Wow, just looking at the list of ratings seem weird. 12, 15, 17, 18? These numbers are so close together just for the age ratings. Compared to the ESRB having Everyone 10+, Teen (13) Mature (17) feels more consistent. (because it's THREE YEARS APART) Still considering less than like 3% of games get a Adults only (18) rating, why not just make the mature rating age 18 anyway and just call it a day? Or 21 for that matter. How big a deal is one year difference anyway?

I think some of you are forgetting that they use devkits or testkits to test the games. You are not allowed to move these devkits outside the office. So you just can't simply take the devkit home. The companies are very protective of their hardware.
So yeah, the reason they can't do it from home is simply because they can't take the hardware home and therefore not play the games at home.

[EDIT]
I was probably wrong. They use footage at least for smaller games. They may use dev or testkits for larger more influential games. I don't know. But as far as for indies. They use footage.
Though there are still things you need to keep secret. And having a secure company network is part of that.

They got the colors fked up - black and you think of dark and horror so should be 18 and orange you think of drawing the sun and drinking orange juice should be all ages

It's fine. From what i gathered cero is shitty anyways it's more censored than any other rating system.

But it makes more sense than pegi... like did you know that Fahrenheit ( indigo prophecy in USA) is uncensored in pal regions and Has only 16+ and not 18+ ? Like when they realised uncensored version in USA it had AO rating which is super rare and only around 20 games have them... But pegi gave it 16+ and it's fucking bullshit!
Btw nowdays they give most of stuff one rating higher than it should be, like i haven't seen a single 3+ game that isn't sports or racing since the second half of PS3 it's just stupid.

They can probably work from home BUT there is probably something more to it. However, it's just computer games people. You all probably got a ton of games you never even played that you have on your steam catalog or shelf.

Out of all the countries in the world, very few have legally binding age ratings - just sell them from one of those!

If it wasn't for the stereotypically famous Japanese moral integrity you can bet they would already be doing this :P

Yeah, they've gone so overboard on a lot of censorship and classifications recently that CERO Z pretty much doesn't exist anymore, with CERO D being the highest rating they regularly give out these days.

Keep in mind Z is basically their version of AO and used on things like actual porn games, so only A-D are really used on "regular" games. It's less about the actual age number and more about the "you can expect this sort of thing".

This is really bad news. Looks like a lot of games are going to be delayed now thanks to CERO shutting down temporarily. Wish video games didn't have to be rated

This answers my question, thank you. I do think given the worldwide circumstances, devkits SHOULD be allowed to be taken home, but this definitely isn't something that's life or death.
