All the Wii guides usually have 249 base 56 and 250 base 57.

I just want to know what makes 251 base 58 important for vWii. I don't like to install anything before knowing the functionality or purpose behind what I am installing.

Is it the same case as Wii where it's to enable peripherals?

Hello.:)

It is not really "important" but as Backup "recommended" for Games (Spongebob Boat Bash for Example) which are not running on 56 and/or 57.(and very much are working with this Setup).
With this "Triple" cIOS Setup your should be able to run near all Wii Games with the USBLoaders in the vWii Environment.:)
And as you maybe noticed,Alternatives cIOS on the vWii are not really given like Hermes cIOS.But also not needed, because the actual USBLoaders (GX and WiiFlow Lite Mod) runs the Wii Games near perfect on 249 and 250.

You can read about the "Functionality" in this GBAtemp Guide:

Thank you.:)

cIOS based on IOS58 is rarely used.
it was mostly installed and suggested by guides written by users who didn't understand how cIOS worked, and decided to install lot of useless things. Mostly on the start of vWii hacking (Wii guides didn't suggest that one), I couldn't count how many random setup users suggested to be the first to get vWii hacking working, without understanding the console only loads one IOS at a time and having 3 wasn't why it worked. *let's fill the console with random unneeded shit ... oh it works! that's the way to do it!* you see the thing?

base58 is slower than base57 for USB read access, and has many non working games (it will freeze or randomly black screen while playing). only very few games really need that one.
I think it was either chosen because of increment value 56>57>why not 58! (most likely), or because it contains the official USB Module from Nintendo to init USB devices (very less likely, noob didn't even know that).

Do not install it if you don't have a need.
you only need one cIOS, base 57 is usually fine for most games.
if you play lot of guitar hero/rockband, then maybe go with base56.
I started suggesting base57 because a majority people wanting to play Call of Duty Modern warfare, which works only with 57, and had enough of all the newly created threads asking why CoD (and recently Just dance 2020) didn't work! as most other game work also with 57, I decided to go with 57 by default. To my knowledge only spyro (with the NFC portal accessory) needed base56 and less users have that one, but I only recently learned about all the Guitar Hero games needing base56 (like.. last week!).

Look here for the "required base":
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_cIOS_base_Compatibility_List
this lists only problematic games, the one which work with only one specific base, either 56, OR 57, or neither.
games working fine with 56 AND 57 are not listed as they are not problematic, and you can go with any single slot cIOS setup (either base 56 or 57).

usually, I only recommend this :
slot249: d2x v10 r52, base57

If you prefer USB read speed, go with base56 instead, but you might need 57 for Cod and Just dance.
USB read speed wise : 56>57>58

if you really need the second base, you can install it in slot250, and change your loader or game settings accordingly when needed. I recommend you only set the "other slot number" individually in your game settings, that'll prevent you to change your main loader's IOS setting every time you play a different game.

Thanks so much for all your efforts Cyan!!!
You just mention Just Dance 2020 which indeed runs fine with base 57 in slot 250.
I'm having problems with 2018 and 2019 though. I'm getting a black screen saying "Reading Disc..."
I've been trying several wbfs files (PAL and NTSC) but all to no avail. I'm using Loader GX and d2x v10 r52 base 56 in slot 249 and base 57 in slot 250.
I've heard some people are encountering the same problem but only very few.
Any idea if base 58 in 251 would be able to solve this or is there anything else causing this?
Thanks in advance.

[edit] Just encountered the same error after playing 30 minutes with Just Dance 2 Which is quite old! No idea what's going on but something's not right... [/edit]

base 58 in 251
As said, the destination number only matters to the user who is going to select them and therefore must have an idea of what is there :)

Now, whether base 58 in general would matter: it might (and trying is free) but probably not, I don't know which IOS those games officially use (but most likely not 58 - Configurable usb loader will tell you), if a CIOS offers that as a supported base it's a smart idea to use it, but even then 100% compatibility (never mind accuracy) can't be guaranteed

Try your disk/backups on another console, it's not necessarily the fault of the latter - it may be no Xbox or PS2 but it's well known that not 100% of USB Mass Storage Class implementations work on Wii/U :)

Why not try Enhanced Vwii with Teconmoon's injector?

try it.
remember than having it installed is not enough, you need to actually use it by changing the loader's settings.
saying you are using "base56 in 249, and base57 in 250" doesn't mean you actually tried both (one after the other).
old just dance used to work fine with base56. if you try both and only 56 work, please report it so we can update the compatibility list for other users info !

"reading disc" could mean the console lost access to the data and is, you know, attempting to do just that : "reading disc". usually error message ARE the solution.
maybe the HDD is disconnecting while playing (not enough power on vwii!), or sleep mode is switched ON ?

but most likely not 58 - Configurable usb loader will tell you
It could be a nice idea to add that info in USBGX too, in a new game info option maybe?

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
Yes, I know about telling Loader GX which slot to use. My global setting is slot 249 (base 56) and with the individual game settings I'm overruling this to slot 250 (base57).
Haven't tried a different HDD though, I didn't know about the low power specs of the Wii's USB ports.
Its an older USB3 drive and I recall it not working on certain other low power USB host controllers.
Does the Wii have a current limit per USB port or is the current shared by both ports? If it's per single port, I could try one of those cables that has 2 type A connectors enabling power draw from both ports.

low powered USB is only for WiiU, and this thread is in WiiU section.
if you use a Wii, it shouldn't be a problem, but try another device just to be sure and leave it out that possibility. trying multiple different thing let you narrow the problem.

if your device need more power, either the LED shutdown, or you hear clicking noises.
instead of trying another device, you can start by trying Y-cable to get more power if it's not externally powered already.

Oops, my bad. I came here by doing a search and totally missed that it was a topic in the WiiU section
No clicking sound or anything (it did do that on the other devices I had problems with) but I'll try a Y-cable anyway. If that still doesn't solve it I'll have to buy a new HD and see if that's doing better.
Thanks again. I'll stop posting here now. I don't want to hijack the thread with a non-related problem.
