Sakurai says work on Smash Ultimate will be finished after latest DLC, no future Smash games planned

Masahiro Sakurai might be able to finally take a break, as revealed by a new Famitsu interview. According to a translation via Gematsu, Sakurai stated that once the six characters from the second Fighters Pass are released, development work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate "will finally come to an end". And that at this time, there are no plans for an upcoming Smash game in the future, as "both myself and those at Nintendo haven't thought about the future [of the series] at all". As far as the Fighters Pass 2 lineup goes, the characters have already been confirmed, and are set in stone. Sakurai also mentioned that he's not the one making the roster choices, and that he just goes off suggestions from Nintendo themselves, but he still develops the game not for himself, but "to make other people happy".

Development for Ultimate began as early as 2015, after the DLC was completed for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U was completed. The game itself was announced in 2018, and released later that same year.

That's true! But still, while people stay with Smash for good and polished gameplay, rarely anyone gets into it for any other reason than "my favorite characters are here". Same for hype waves around the game - it's always about new characters and cameos, rather than new mechanics.
I rarely boot up Ultimate because of the dire lack of singleplayer content; sure, I can fight CPUs in tourneys or regular Smash bouts, but there's no Subspace Emissary. There's no classic Classic Mode. There's no All-Star Mode.
The only thing Ultimate has for single players is the World of Light, and that's just...incredibly 'meh'. I've finished it twice, and I've had the game for over a year now, if not two maybe.

I'd much rather boot up Brawl and enjoy the Subspace Emissary, but the Wii is tucked away somewhere and the home menu is a bitch to control due to the nonfunctional motion controls. I'd rather boot up 4 Wii U and actually have a worthwhile Classic and All-Star. Ultimate...the only things it really has over Brawl and 4 Wii U are a lacking of random tripping (whatever), polish, no cut characters, and more fan-favourites like Banjo and Joker. Otherwise, it's just yet another Super Smash Bros. game, y'know?

You trying to say that Nintendo is a yakuza clan or something? ;)
Not really. They're just a video game company, and Smash is one of their highest grossing IP's. Spoilers, there's another one coming after Ultimate, and another one after that, in perpetuity until it doesn't make them stacks of money anymore or the company dissolves, neither scenario is anywhere in sight.

Depending on how the next system works, it might not even need a port at that, it could just function like a PS4 game on a PS4 Pro, or an Xbone game on an Xbone X. Meaning that the presumed Switch 2 may be capable of playing any Switch 1 game, and if the game recognizes it is on the better hardware, it can then output in better framerate and/or resolution. And at that point, maybe they'd decide to just pick up where they had last left off with Ultimate, continuing to add content to it, but the new content only being accessible on the new hardware if it starts to become too taxing or they want to help push sales of the new hardware. Seems like the logical direction to go with Smash honestly if they're going to just continue with the series in this same direction without any radical new changes.
What your suggesting is more like a 3ds to new 3ds transition but maybe a ds to 3ds transition could work better, still retaining the performance boost stuff though. It would be a clean cut between the two but with backwards compatibility still like between the ps4 and ps5. Though I am a little iffy on the platform specific dlc though. That will stab a hard divide into the community. With both smash 4 and ultimate so far dlc has not stopped 1 player from playing with another if only one of them has a certain piece of dlc. Platform specific dlc would likely do that though.

I dunno, if there is a gap of like 5 years between the end of this cycle, and then starting up the cycle after the next system launches, I don't think there'd be that much of an issue. Sure there would be some that are mad, but at the end of the day, there'd be less people upset about that than there would be people mad that they'd have to buy a deluxe version of Ultimate again for the new system which would then still get it's own new content regardless.

If it's Sakurai's last Smash they should end the series. No way can someone else step in and even get close.
yeah lets end the series that is always like the top 3rd selling game on each console that is came out, smash sells more than zelda or xenoblade, etc, it only looses to mario platformers and mario kart most of the generations.

So killing a top selling it is ridiculous, they might as well kill zelda and pokemon too becuase the original devs passed the torchs long ago...

Resident Evil, Star Wars, Silent Hill, Castlevania, that's what happened when you change the director.

resident evil is very debatable some people think only the first 3 are good i like the 4 the most and 7 is preety good as well so i dont see an issue with it.

castlevania had the same director when simons quest came out and that sucked ass... so again nothing changed castlevania games have been good without the original direction like symphony of the night among others.

Star wars is again worst example since the original prequel trilogy does exist with same director...

I could go on and on and on.

Sometimes a fresh take on something might even be a breeze of fresh air.

Is a 50/50 it would work or don't, the thing is if this happen in other time sure it would be not so bad but in this time seeing the actual game tastes...i'm not so positive about that, maybe the next smash games without Sakurai wouldn't be so bad but hardly will feel like a smash, maybe i'm wrong but...
