Sakurai says work on Smash Ultimate will be finished after latest DLC, no future Smash games planned

Masahiro Sakurai might be able to finally take a break, as revealed by a new Famitsu interview. According to a translation via Gematsu, Sakurai stated that once the six characters from the second Fighters Pass are released, development work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate "will finally come to an end". And that at this time, there are no plans for an upcoming Smash game in the future, as "both myself and those at Nintendo haven't thought about the future [of the series] at all". As far as the Fighters Pass 2 lineup goes, the characters have already been confirmed, and are set in stone. Sakurai also mentioned that he's not the one making the roster choices, and that he just goes off suggestions from Nintendo themselves, but he still develops the game not for himself, but "to make other people happy".

Development for Ultimate began as early as 2015, after the DLC was completed for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U was completed. The game itself was announced in 2018, and released later that same year.

I don't think anybody is expecting this to be the "last Smash Bros. game ever." But they've never released more than one Smash game for a single console (aside from Virtual Console), so I think it's safe to say that we won't hear anything about a new Smash game until the Switch's successor is at least announced. I'm happy for Sakurai, I hope he takes a well-needed break, although I really do wish they'd keep adding more DLC characters.

I honestly never understood why people were ever hyping for a sequel past Melee.
Project M is really good

I don't know if Nintendo will ever produce a truly great successor - but that doesn't mean it's impossible

Afterall Ninty did manage to create Melee in the first place :P a successor to the original

There's also the fact that, to be honest, I barely play Smash anymore. Maybe it's because I don't have any IRL friends to play it with, but while I understand one can turn it into a competitive game, I still think it doesn't hold a candle to stuff like Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R in terms of the amount of fun I've got from your traditional tournament fighter.

The content is obviously "Ultimate" but in some sense it is a step back compared to Smash Wii U.
Some online features were actually made worse, there is more input lag (why?!), effects are too exaggerated (the developers made them more exaggerated with every entry) and look worse compared to Wii U (e.g. fire effects) and the increased speed of hit characters flying away also makes it more difficult to hit them a 2nd, 3rd (etc) time.

They have a window of 2 years to get the 6 more fighters out (by December 2021 or somewhere around then according to that Byleth showcase). That seems like a long time for only 6 more fighters. I don't think we're in store for more fighters mind you, but I wouldn't be surprised if something else for Smash comes out within the 2 years of development left for the game.

Specifically, I could see a paid expansion of sorts get released for the game. Seems like it'd be a way to make a lot of extra easy money, Smash players will happily buy what more content they can offer for the game, and Nintendo seems to be embracing the idea of expansions more and more these days. I think this idea has more merit when you consider the words Sakurai specifically said about Home Run Contest being the last mode to get added to the game. The way he said it was, it was "pretty much" the last mode that would get added to the game. Perhaps, that qualifier of pretty much was his way of saying, this is the last free mode to get added to the base game, but more modes may be on board via something like a paid expansion or something similar.

It certainly would make sense, there are a lot of missing great modes from Smash's history for a game titled 'Ultimate': Break the Targets, Boss Rush, All-Star (proper), Smash Run, Smash Tour (for the few that enjoyed it), Master Orders, Crazy Orders, Board the Platforms, they could give us HD versions of Melee's Adventure and/or Subspace Emissary (obviously not even holding my breath on those adventure modes returning even if there were no real changes to those modes). And heck I could think of a few more great modes or options they could add like a Boss vs mode where one player is any of the bosses, and all the other players fight together to take that player down, or an option to toggle a fighter swap mode where at the start of a match, you choose 2 fighters that you can swap between with either a taunt, or random or timed intervals. Plus there are still a few classic stages that are omitted that would be welcome by many players.

Obviously if such an expansion were on the cards i wouldn't expect all of that to be added, but it just goes to show that Ultimate has plenty of content that could still yet be added beyond some new fighters and accompanying stages.

You are right, and you wouldn´t need Sakurai to bring back a stage editor, more old stages (or make new ones), Adventure mode etc.
I`d love to see Custom Moves being brought back but that´s very unlikely (I really dislike the fact that DLC characters lacked those in the previous game).

We already got the Stage Builder in Ultimate via a free update awhile ago though... did you miss that? Or did you mean something else?

Frankly of all the modes not in Ultimate, the one I'd love to see most still get added is Smash Run, with the addition of both local and online multiplayer.

I hope the "pretty much" means we'll get a proper Boss Battles, rather than the version at the end of WoL
without Master/Crazy, and being forced to deal with the annoying platforms, and having to battle both Galeem and Dharkon at the same time.

I forgot about it. Now I remember. Even has customizable backgrounds... oh and ice returns. :D Had missed it in Smash Wii U.

If it's Sakurai's last Smash they should end the series. No way can someone else step in and even get close.

I agree with you in principle, especially since they said future Smash games will likely never have as large a roster again or at least not include every fighter again. BUT, at the end of the day, Smash is business, and good business for Nintendo at that. To expect any one title to ever truly be the last title would be like expecting there to never be another Super Mario, Zelda, or Mario Kart title again. It's simply too reliable of a successful and beloved franchise to ever be completely done at this point.

Having said that, I could see exceptions to the rule, maybe Ultimate doesn't truly end, but is rather put on an indefinite hiatus. Let rest for another 5 or so years, and then later they come back to Ultimate and just continue to build off of it. Would certainly make sense in terms of not needing to build the entire game up again, and presumably with the next system capable of playing Switch games as well, the title could make use of the more powerful hardware (if it detects it's on it) to output better framerate and resolution (not unlike PS4 games played on the pro or Xbone games played on the X). Or if they did choose to make another Smash game in another 5 years or so, maybe they'd make it a spinoff title, like I could see a full 3D take on Smash bros where you aren't just fighting with length and height but with depth as well. Such a drastically different take for the game would be a reasonable excuse to not have nearly as large of a roster as well given how different the game would play even though the end goal of launching your opponents off stage wouldn't change.
