Every Half-Life game will be free to play on Steam until the launch of Half-Life Alyx

Want to re-familiarize yourself with the Half-Life franchise? Or interested in trying the series for the first time? You'll be able to, easily, thanks to a new promotion held by Valve. In order to hype people up for the imminent launch of Half-Life Alyx, all the games in the franchise are free to play on Steam, for a limited time. Running from today until Alyx's release, Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and 2, Source, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift are all available for Steam owners to download. These aren't free to keep, but you'll be able to play them without cost for the next two months.

Yes. More ports. That's what the world needs.

Srlsy, stfu :rofl2:
what's wrong with wanting to able to play elsewhere? sure, it would be more justifiable if they where asking for the switch given what it is but non the less it still is nice having options

the original half life besdies pc only had a single port released on ps2... and half life 2 and both episodes only got a port each on ps3/xbox360 and solo hl2 got an xbox port too, so yeah they arent games that are ported to everything all the time.. both games hadvery few ports ...

getting it ported to current gen consoles(or next gen like ps5 and xboxsx) would let the newer generation enjoy them since not everyone plays on pc.

Grow up you ignorant fool
I was on gbatemp while you were earing diapers. Which also means I am pretty much grown up. Grown up enough to be sick of companies using anything as an excuse to re-release games for profit (nintendo I'm looking at you).

It's not like it requires a beast of a computer to run it, and also, if you want to play it just get a cheap used ps3 or xbox360

Now a switch port would have introduced portability, would have been interesting.

I knew the website when first started but sign up and if you've read some of my posts you'd kno I'm from the 8 bit days- by telling someone to seriously shut the fk up ain't grown up mate-thers always gonna be ports now because new generations of people are playing games-thers nothing wrong with a port if a company is still bringing out new stuff like zelda the awakening probably millions out ther never pld it and the remake is like a new game-I'm all for new games before a port but my point was half life games hav never had trophies so tht needs a remaster no matter when it came out and lots of gamers out ther play for trophies as it expands the game and givs us more challenging things to do

you cant play the original half life on any xbox and the only ps3 that could play the original half life would be a phat 40gb/60gb model since those were the only ones that had ps2 disc read capabilities so yeah you cant just get a cheap ps3(slim ones) becuase you cant play it there and no xbox had the original half life available at all.

Ahh, just like every popular thread that announces something good ends up in a kindergarden fight about ports. Whatever.

Anyway, here's the order you should play Half Life in:
-Half Life (Source) / Black Mesa
-Half Life: Blue Shift
-Half Life: Opposing Force
-Half Life 2
-Half Life 2: Episode 1
-Half Life 2: Episode 2
Seriously, do not start with Half Life 2, the game expects that you played Half Life start to finish.

though it is still an enjoyable stand alone experience. I still need to push my way through the original games :/

Even if Alyx releases and you can't get the game anymore, people who already downloaded all Half Life games using the Source engine can use this command (in the case of Half Life Source) to continue playing the game after the 2 month period. All you lose after the 2 month period are achievements and community posts.

Good job Valve, for giving away DRM-free games for free.

Robin Walker, game designer at Valve says in an interview that the next Half Life game won´t take another 13 years to come out:

"We ended the game in the way you always end the game as a game developer, which is that the end is when you feel like now you really know how to make this game,” Walker continued. “I’d like to believe that we’re as good as we’ve ever been at building Half-Life at this point, and I hope we continue to make some more. I don’t think there’s going to be another 13 years [until the next one], and if it is, I probably won’t be working on it. I’m too old for that.”

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/half...ased-adds-the-portal-gun-to-half-life-source/

Modder ‘NOAHakaVOSEN’ has finally released Version 1.0 for his Portal Mod for Half-Life Source.
As its title suggests, Half-Life: Source -- Portal Edition adds the Portal gun to Half-Life: Source.

What this means is that you will be able to play the whole Half-Life: Source single-player campaign with the Portal Gun. Moreover, all of the features from Portal appear to be working great in Half-Life: Source.

In order to install this mod, you’ll need Half-Life 2 and Source SDK Base 2007. Once you have installed them, you’ll have to download the “hl1_portal.rar” archive from here. Then, you’ll have to open it and extract its folder to your “sourcemods” directory. Quit and restart Steam, and you should see “Half-Life: Source -- Portal Edition” in your Library.

Edit: https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this...y-textures-and-bump-maps-to-half-life-source/

Modder ‘Coomer’ has released a brand new version of his AI Uspcale Mod for Half-Life Source. This new version adds normal maps to almost all textures. Thankfully, though, the modder has not added bump maps to the Xen levels.

This pack uses a batch of generated normal maps with alpha channel to make dark parts of the textures non-reflective. As a result of that, the size of the mod is now around 4.38GB . Furthermore, the modder had to reduce the size of the normal maps to 512×512 due to the big file size. However, he does plan to generate better and bigger size normal maps as soon as he finds a good algorithm.
