If you tainted your Sysnand with a cfw, example installing a nsp. It won't help playing without a cfw when you play legit. It is tainted because of the "illegal" nsp according to Nintendo. So if you setup a Emunand. It's a emulated sysnand where you can do all your cfw stuff, and keep your sysnand clean for online.

i guess, how much storage does the emunand take, also how likely is it to get banned for installing a nsp when offline

If you install a .nsp onto sysnand, it's like 100% safe you'll get banned in the next wave.
Doesn't matter if you were offline or online with your sysnand. Switch safes a ton of data and will send them eventually to Nintendo. Esp some gamefiles. I think if you happen to have a clean nand backup there is a chance that you can restore a non corrupted sysnand to be somewhat bansafe.

It takes about 30gb partition of your SD card to setup an emunand. Just follow this guide https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/

IF you have an emunand on your SD card and it's done with hekate, fusee primary will autoboot the emunand if you haven't altered any config files.

why does it matter if the backup is clean or not, if i restore a backup that hasent been blocked it still should be fine right?

If you've installed any .nsp, did some hacky/pirate stuff and go online again, a ban is most likely inevitable.
A clean nand could somewhat safe you, if you did your cfw stuff only offline and never connected to WiFi without protection like 90dns or incognito.
It's not the backup which has been blocked or not which lead you to problems. Your serial number will be flagged, doesn't matter if you ran into problems before.
Once you are blocked, you cannot simply restore to a point where you haven't and be safe again. Nintendo would still ban you right away.
