Hello, I finally bought a 2DS, and I need some information about which homebrew options would be best for what I want to do with it. It seems like there are a lot of options (compared to the DS at least, where I just got by with a flash cart).

The most important thing I want to do is being able to create and restore backups of 3DS game saves. I've read that there is a backup function on the 3DS itself, but that it encrypts to just the 3DS the backup was made from, and various games won't load anything but the most recent backup created (or something like that). I'm not particularly interested in running ROMs on it. Or even most homebrew programs for that matter. The main purposes I would want any sort of custom anything for is game backups, and potentially related programs (like creating backups of 3DS carts themselves, although this isn't a big deal to me right now). Also things like that PKSM program, since Pokemon is a big part of why I finally got a 3DS in the first place.

I'm also not sure if CFW or any sort of homebrew options prevent the 3DS from going online or risking it being banned. I definitely want to keep mine online-capable if at all possible.

Sorry if these questions are answered elsewhere, I've done a bunch of reading various guides and such for 3DS homebrew and came away with more questions than answers, honestly.

Install CFW by following the guide. https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Backing up saves: Checkpoint and/or JKSM.
Please install full CFW. JKSM is able to start from userland homebrew only. But this is not a good idea. It crashes sometimes and not all functions are available.

The internal/official backup function is not available for all titles. Manual backup/restore of the encrypted files will lead to data loss. See [3dbrew] Anti Savegame Restore for more information.

Checkpoint and JKSM can successfully restore saves of games using this anti-feature.

*Sigh* Another “I’m scared of getting banned.
  • Disable “Sending of System Information” in SpotPass settings
  • Disable “Show friend what you’re playing.” in Friend List settings.
  • Don’t cheat online.
Ban risk with CFW is minimal. The thing with disabling some settings is a little controversial: needed vs. useless
Cheating online is like begging for a (well-deserved) ban.

Thank you for the fast response!

So is CFW really the best way of doing what I'm talking about? How about a flashcart as an alternative option? I've also heard about Cubic Ninja being used to hack the 3DS, but is that still an option (a friend has a cart he could give me for that). Or is a flashcart redundant with CFW an high-capacity SD card?

I've no intention of cheating online (or even actually playing any sort of competitive online anything, about the most I'd be doing is trading Pokemon, not even battling). The question about potential banning was more just to have an idea of what I'd potentially be getting myself into if I use CFW. Would be silly to potentially lose my ability to go online entirely just because I rushed blindly into something I'm starting with basically zero knowledge on.

Since my 2DS has the latest firmware, I would need to use the Seedminer method? Or would Cubic Ninja also work (since it sounds a lot simpler).

Expensive flashcarts for the 3DS mode are considered to be obsolete by most GBAtemp members. From what I’ve read using Sky3DS+ online without private headers actually has the risk of a ban. Don’t ask me further – I don’t own a 3DS flashcart and never played anything online on any system in my life.

No idea if Ninjahax can be started on higher than 11.9 – because the site has not been updated since. All the *hax methods (PicHaxx works on latest firmware) give only userland homebrew access which is enough for some basic things. JKSM starts from the Homebrew Launcher. But:
  • I never did much testing with this and got frequent crashes
  • This is not comfortable (target one title at a time, crash on exit, reboot, do the exploit again for next title)
The process of installing CFW is pretty easy for the end user, the software is well-engineered and safe. I would recommend doing so (Seedminer → Bannerbomb3 → Fredtool). The guide looks overwhelming at first. This is just because it is sooo detailed and holding the user’s hand at each step.

Hm, so flashcarts actually pose more of a risk than cfw? Surprising, but that's why I like asking about this sort of thing first.

I guess I'll go ahead and give installing the CFW a try. Thanks for your help and answering my questions though, much appreciated!
