Valve removes nearly 1,000 games from Steam after abuse of Steamworks tools

If you've ever browsed the Steam storefront, you'll no doubt have seen copious amounts of cheap-looking games, created as low-effort cash-grabs. Games like this flooding Valve's service have been notorious for years, but it appears that they've been cracking down within the past day. Hundreds of games were removed from Steam, with Valve stating that the reason for the purge was due to publishers who were "abusing" Steamworks tools. Nearly 1,000 different tiles were affected, though most if not all of them were barely known at all, with no major indie or AAA games having been removed at this time, and many were from a single specific publisher called Dagestan Technology.

Seems like a generally good idea. Can't say I looked at the whole list though. If they were just cheap reskins I understand, but I feel like small low effort games might be able to have their own section even if they don't have much content

Most people will be better off from this. Some YouTube and Twitch channels like Vinesauce may suffer a bit. He likes to play shitty Steam games on occasion for the enjoyment of his fans. Or I guess "likes" is a strong word. It's more like he tolerates them. But they can be entertaining to watch other people play.
Bold and brash, more like belongs in the trash.
What's that a quote from again? I swear I've heard that before

I doubt he'll suffer. There's always a surplus of garbage on Steam.

Oh right, now I remember. I saw it in a Dope or Nope video recently where they actually bought said painting, which someone decided to start producing and selling on Amazon for some reason.

I'd hate to be that guy who stifles creativity by saying this or that is too cheap to be on a store, but at the same time, asset flips and the like totes need to be purged.
If only they didn't stop at 5% of the problem. A few years ago scrolling through the Steam store was a daily hoot for me, these days if a list view pops up I'm out.

I see tons of cash grab games like these show up on the 3ds end of life period and I highly suspect many contain some type of (intentional) flaw which would allow piracy or homebrew. I mean, who needs 200 versions of Vanilla Arkanoid. Also, I just can't see some of these making anything, knowing how long the process is to get through Nintendos checks and all... they simply wouldn't make that much money to make it worth their while.

Unless they're a start up just going for the Badge... "I published through/on Nintendo"... to add to their 'folio.

Of course, I could be wrong.

In at least one or two cases I have been right in the past (several DSI series games), although they might not have been intentional.

isn't Steamworks supposed to allow anyone to release their games without any curation whatsoever? how can you abuse it? it doesn't matter the quality AFAIK, they paid their 100 dollars and should get to publish their games IMO. Of course there's probably a clause in their contract saying "steam may pull down your game whenever steam wishes and you can't do anything about it" but it sucks, even if 99,99% of those games were shit.

Yeah someone should do something like play the thing, assess its merits and display them in such a form as to convey their understandings of the concept to others such that they might make better purchase decisions.
