I would just flip a coin.

All I would suggest is be consistent and avoid too many decimals if it’s expected to be said regularly e.g. 3.1.4.1

You're welcome. For me it all just comes down to how much support the program is going to have after release - long term is always :

major. Minor. Bugfix. (3.4.2)

Short term :

Major. Minor (3.4)

For one offs they usually just get code names - could really be anything and really depends on the program so if it was something related to the program... I just like hearing people saying things like "I'm having a problem with Donkey... Capybara was much more stable"

It's long term, and I also want to use x.x.x

For me it's important to have the less ammount of digits possible, it's easier to remember which version is which.
