'Minecraft Earth', a mobile AR game, announced

minecraft earth.JPG
Yes it's from Microsoft, yes it's blocky and yes, it's pretty much Pokemon GO: Minecraft Edition w/o Pokemon! Announced today, Minecraft Earth is an AR mobile game allowing you to superimpose Minecraft blocks in the real world. Some of the game's features include:
  • Collect! Minecraft Earth features many of the mobs you know and love, along with a bunch of new ones we can’t wait to show you. Over time, you’ll get the chance to discover unique variants, and use them to populate your builds. Minecraft pigs parading around your local park? That’s about to become your reality.
  • Explore! Your real-life neighbourhood is about to take on a new dimension. Gather resources, take on challenges, and experience a whole new world to discover!
  • Collaborate! Build even better by teaming up with other Minecraft Earth players. You can craft amazing creations together. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
  • Survive! Sure, you’re good at fighting hostile mobs in Minecraft, but are you ready to battle Minecraft mobs in real life? Best of luck, because we’re going to put your survival skills to the test!

There is no release window for this title but a limited beta is planned for this summer and registrations are live on the official website.

I absolutely love how angry people get about anything related to Minecraft or Fortnite.

I think this game can do well. Granted, I probably won't ever touch it. But I'm gonna hold back on the elitist snobbiness that often comes with prefering certain games over others.
It's not angry, is more like ''Neh, another rat kid game''

I don't think it's supposed to be like pokemon go really. I think it's supposed to be more like minecraft for hololens except for smart phones

I consider snark-filled bias against kid/casual-oriented games rather silly. It's understandable to mock crappy monetization tactics that often pop up in mobile titles, but getting all stuck-up over the mere mention of something like Minecraft or Fortnite just isn't a good look for community (especially since both games are actually competently made)

This is actually pretty awesome - but I'm skeptical for how well it's going to work. The pessimist in me is screaming that it's going to start as seeing mobs in real life and not any of the blocks or building. The other pessimist in me says "how the hell are other people's creations going to stay in a specific spot for some one else using their phone to view in AR? AR is very wonky to begin with."

Why not implement actual minecraft Alternate Reality, you know, like in the first holo lens trailer. Play a enclosed minecraft map on a table or a enclosed space. How about develop that into a phone app? Crazier idea make a NFC game out of that and give the player the ability to make his own biome at different locations and perhaps be able to use the map you built in minecraft PE or minecraft C++ edition since all console versions are connected.

I get the need for a big IP to take on Pokémon and break the monopoly but I think this could have been something more.

TL;DR: why not make the ar app a cross between minecraft holo lens edition and worldedit?

Matter of compatibility. One of the major things to consider when doing mobile games is difference between specs/features on different phones - the more phones can run your game, the bigger your audience is. Minecraft Earth sounds like something easily implemented via G-sensor, camera and accelerometer - the whole hololens/NFC thingie, on the other hand, sounds like something implausible for anything relatively old and/or not high-end.

i can just see it now idiots out on their lawns pretending to build their stupid castles while looking incredibly stupid doing it. can't wait for the memes
They'll have some actual fun outside while socializing with people and creating fancy stuff though, and you won't, so the joke is on you .u.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So that version is semi rare
