Google GDC 2019 gaming event coverage - Google Stadia unveiled

Google is hosting a special gaming announcement set to take place at this year's GDC 2019. It's finally time to see what the company has up its sleeves, and what they have planned for the future in regards to gaming. The stream is now live, and you can watch the above video, or check back here to read GBAtemp's live updates.

Google wishes to build a game platform for everyone, bringing together all forms of gamers. This has been named the Stadia.

The Google Stadia will run on as many platforms as possible, from the Chromecast, to Android, to PCs, where games will be streamed using Google's low latency technology.

When watching games on YouTube, you'll be able to click a single "play now" button to instantly try any supported game in your browser, without downloading, without updating, or without any interruptions.

The goal is to lower the barrier to entry, so that gaming is more accessible.

Google will also be making their own controller which will connect through wifi to the host game session in order to reduce input lag. There will be a share button and a Google Assistant feature.

Right now, Stadia supports 1080/60, but at launch, it will support 4K, and even 8K.

Unreal, Havok, and Unity engines will support the hardware, which will run off Linux. Each game will run off of Google's data centers.

ID Software has gotten their upcoming DOOM Eternal working on the Google Stadia, and will be bringing it to the platform.

Google will also have its own first party development studio, Stadia Entertainment, which will create games for the platform.

For one side, I feel pretty hyped for this, being my first reason the "no límits hardware" they are talking about. Literally we could see amazing games coming from that concept, just imagine all the posibilites. On the other side, I feel worried about the minimun bandwith you will need in order to keep an stable stream quality and the fact that this will kill modding in every game released, and lets not talk about phisycal releases.

a terminal for dedicated gaming service which will unavailable on both Xbox/ps and potentially no need for further HW upgrades, is a console. this is even better....

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

ouya? that meme console was made by meme company, the time has been changed, i have faith in google nore than $ony ;)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I', SO FREACKING HYPED! if there are some good exclusives, D1 for me!
how is streaming better than a console that runs the games? no internet no play, and slow internet means huge lag... lol even ouya could atleast play games natively and they never said they wont put this google service on the consoles aswhell, heck the leak that switch joycons are in chrome already means the switch will get this streaming service and if switch gets it, i see no reason why they wont put it on xb1 or ps4, they will just charge you monthly to play some games so they dont care if you play them on pc,switch,ps4 or whatever.

they should just have made an actual console so people would have 2 options they could stream or buy the game and play it in hardware by downloading and such, seriously only a streaming service is a very hard pass for me.

Not amused, can't even watch Youtube videos at 1080p with my current internet connection (the best connection I can pay and believe me, it's really expensive).

On top of that, they did not say how much it'll be, if it'll be a per game purchase, a service purchase or what, you don't even own anything you pay for, you only borrow while you are connected.

So what you're saying is that the Xbox One's online only DRM was a good idea after all? Can't wait to be forced online to play video games!

i live in a small town with only 5000 citizens, but we are able to get 100mb/s speed internet service, internet will reach every corners, so it won't be a huge problem.
This service will even available for some obsolet HW, unlike pc or console players both M$ and $ony have you to upgrade hw to play games, ps4->PRO, X1->X1 scarlet, and on pc is even worse cauz lastgen CPU and GPU costs 5-800 euro each, and you guys never complained about upgrades but complain for internet service??

this doesn't make any sense, IF YOU GUYS CAN ACCEPT NETFLIX which work at same way as console:
you buy VHS/DVD/bluray which costs 10-15€ each, now you pay a small fee to subscribe to video streaming service.

Both NETFLIX and Stadia work at same way, You can accept Netflix? then you can embrace Stadia too!

@migles there won't be any monopoly since both X2 and ps5 are already in development, most AAA games will be released on them and pc, and you are STILL free to make choice on which platform you want to play games.

Game streaming it the Futere(R), both M$ and $ony are already offering similar premium sub service AKA PS NOW and M$ game pass.

exactly my point... they will create a huge monopoly with the big companies on board.. other developers will slowly lose interest to develop to anything else..

i see they got very good points, streaming is great in all ways but there is a big drawback.. the people that live far away from their servers or not good enough internet are just screwed up..
specially when developers start to develop only to this plataform, people will not be able to enjoy gaming like they used to... if you live in a shit area with poor ping to their servers, you can't do pretty much anything to solve that issue...
and of course the fact you no longer own anything.. they are free to revoke your access and easily keylog all your inputs and sell data to third parties
the tech companies can easily just give you potato computers while google and etc keeps rising in computational power

As much as I hate to say it, this is the future of where game companies want to go. I don't like it, but this is all going to depend on whether people will pay for this service, or stick to the traditional method of playing games like people have been doing ever since the 70's.

I really want to believe that people will see through this, but we're in 2019, and microtransactions and everything else that started in the 7th generation are still a thing in the US. Can't speak for the EU as I don't live there, and am glad I'm not living there, what with Article 13 and all of the other nonsense happening in that part of the world. Being pessimistic about the gaming industry definitely helps in guarding against disappointments.

If this is actually the future of gaming, I guess it will make going through my game collection easier as I'll have plenty of time to go back and play stuff that I've bought, but haven't played yet.

THIS IS A REAL dedicated gaming console, not a smartbox for mobile games. A giant like google has already bought many small game studios likely will make exclusive games for Stadia.
No, it's not dedicated at all. It's just their shitty little Chromecast that no one buys except for pirating stuff with kodi, in a slightly fancier shell at a premium price.

It's literally just a streamer box. Don't fall for Google's bullshit. They love to lie.

Stedia is shit..

But isn't this still somehow good for us gamers since Stedia uses Linux and Vulkan?
We Linux Gamers will get more native Games.

I couldn't care less for this service, but it's awesome that it runs on Linux. If it runs on stadia or whatever, hopefully they'd also release the game for Linux users.

Can't wait for a future with hundreds of streaming services bleeding money for some terrible concept but they all share in common the usage of a Free platform, whose users are the real winners after all.
