Just purchased an White/Orange New 2DS XL with Mario Kart 7 download code. First time ever owning a Nintendo hand held console so not sure where to start modding the console. I assume all the for mods the new 2DS/3DS are the same?

I've turned it on run through the initial setup. Its running system 11.4.0-37E. Something that can handle DS/3DS backups, DSiware and maybe a little homebrew and emulation.

Read through many forum threads, web sites and watched many tutorials. Just not sure I should update to latest system 11.9 or stick with 11.4. Use an R4 or similar card for mod. Or some other method. Just need someone to point me in the right direction on the best method to use to mod a New 2DS XL console..

Follow this and choose whatever you like. NTRBoot is the easiest and fastest one, but frogminer is 100% free.

From what I have read. Ntrboot method requires a Compatible Flashcart. These are relatively cheap for something like an R4 but only support DS. Expensive to get one that supports 3DS backups like the Sky3DS flashcart. If your firmware is 11.4-11.9. Can they also be used to install CFW to support 3DS backups?

Free and easiest method is to use the CFW method after updating to 11.9. Fredminer is the latest free CFW method for US and JP systems, and cheap CFW for EU systems. Frogminer is still the latest free mthod for EU consoles. Since the eShop has no free DSiWare titles unlike USA/Japan store and requires a purchase to use the Fredminer method.

Once installed console should now be region free. Able to play out of region games and cartridges, virtual console and DSiWare titles. Is there any risk of being banned if going online. Or is that only a risk when playing online with backup or accessing eShop?

You don't want a flashcard which can play 3ds games. 3DS flashcards can't be used for anything. They are super useless.
No risk at all, until you start to cheat online or play games before release.

Thanks so updating to the latest 11.9 and instaling CFW using Frogminer is the way to go?
After doing this would Twilight Menu++ be the way to go if I wanted to play DS *.NDS titles?

I've also read about the 300 title limit and was wondering is there a way around this on the console? I assume 300 titles include DSiWare, Virtual Console, Homebrew, DS and 3DS titles loaded on the memory card. Since I wanted to get a larger microSD card.

DS flashcart is always the way to go for DS games. But yea, Twilight Menu++ might do the job just fine (depends on what games you're going to play).
Seriously? You are going to install 300 titles and play them at the same time period?

No. I'm guessing 300 relates to the maximum amount of titles that show up on the Main Menu. Titles that need to be installed like 3DS games, Virtual Console and homebrew apps. Plus an additional 40 DSiWare title limit.

DS titles don't have this limit since they are aren't installed on the console but rather copied to the MicroSD card and run through a flashcard or menu system such as Twilight Menu++. As do emulators that directly access the titles from the memory card through there own menus.

I know. But why are you interested in bypassing it then?
