I would use an Iphone but I use Tmobile... but it'll be a struggle to keep up with the unlocking/firmware blocking process..

Step 1: Unlock.

Step 2: Don't install new firmware.

Step 3: Go back to Step 2.

I guess.. but you don't get the full benefits of it.. like the new features with each Firmware.. also one thing that bugs me is that you can't use your own mp3s for ringtones.
You have to pay to have them coverted to the phone?

If you've unlocked it, theres an application that lets you transfer mp3s as new ringtones.

The iPhone has a *multi-touch* interface, a web browser and EDGE connectivity. That makes it *awesome*.

It might not be any better as a phone than Nokia 3220, but it's the best damn mobile web browser I've ever tried.

Oh...khaaay, now all I need to know is what the invention really is. The telephone part? The media player part? An electrostatic touch-screen? Bluetooth? Cuz I'm pretty sure I've seen all those before already. Wouldn't call any of it an "invention".
Invention is not always something totally new, as wikipedia says

I wonder how much apple paid someone to get the phone voted gadget of the year. Its wayyyyyy too expensive. I also don't like the idea of them stopping people unlocking phones as the new firmware bricks them. You can stay on the old firmware but that seems pointless to me.

This is the "Invention of the Year."

It doesn't surprise me that this is invention of the year, it's a pretty cool device. Although I wouldn't buy one at the moment due to the price. But I'll say this, in 20 years? We'll all be using more advanced devices just like this in our every day lives. This is what phones, PDAs, MP3 players, etc ...will become.
Fair enough, but I'm enjoying my n95 a lot more, and it has a ton more features than the iPhone. It even has an full-fledged accelerometer in it (not put to same use as iPhone though - used for camera).

The n95 (and even older phones) may not be as pretty as the iPhone but they contain much more features which the iPhone is severely lacking.

IMO the only reason the iPhone is successful is because of the iPod and the fact that it has the Apple logo on it. If this device came out from any other manufacturer at the price it is it would have flopped.

wise words.

irrespective of whether it is a good product or not.

but i think this speaks the most about how stupid Time's "invention of the year" always is.

I've watched a review on TV about the iPhone. No video camera mode. And camera that isn't as good as the other phones.

Makes me think how much I take MP3s as ringtones for granted.

Yes, the iPhone has EDGE....why not 3G which is faster (but still not very fast as my Razr has 3G and takes a year and a half to load anything)?

IMO, it'd be more deserving of it if they encouraged homebrew and didnt lock with companies and gave up stupid protection crap.

(locking to companies, that is a great feature.... not)

Hm, good point. There are devices with more functionality out there. Perhaps the reason they picked the iPhone specifically is because of it's cultural accessibility. I for one don't pretend to know which exact model or brand the n95 is, but the entire world know who Apple is. Making it a product that's more likely to be purchased (putting the price aside)

A hypothetical here... what if tomorrow, lets say... Pioneer Electronics released a game system. It could be amazingly advanced with more features than the competition, but I bet the Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 would still outsell it due to the sheer level of name brand recognition. *nod*
