NPD sales data shows top 10 best selling exclusive games since 1995, all are Nintendo games

The NPD Group has been tracking United States video game sales data since 1995, offering decades of sales history to look back upon. Analyst and employee of The NPD Group, Mat Piscatella, has trawled through the available records in order to create a definitive list of best selling games, with previous lists including what titles shifted the most copies on PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. This time, Piscatella has revealed the best selling console exclusive video game titles since 1995--not including ones that were bundled with hardware--and the results show overwhelming domination by a single company: Nintendo. Every entry on the list belongs to a Nintendo system, ranging from the Wii to the Nintendo 64. The top ten are as follows.

10. Wii Sports Resort
9. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
8. Super Mario 64
7. Mario Kart DS
6. New Super Mario Bros.
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
4. Wii Fit Plus
3. Mario Kart Wii
2. Wii Play
1. Wii Fit

Taking the lead, perhaps surprisingly, is Wii Fit, and the top 5 are solely comprised of Nintendo Wii games. The most recent release from there is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which hit store shelves on November 11, 2009. NPD does not track digital sales data, however none of the above games were available in a digital format at the time of release.

Sony's massive lead this generation can also likely be attributed to the amount of exclusives on PS4. If people cared more about cross-platform games, XB1 wouldn't be way behind Switch in month-to-month sales already.

They don't have that many exclusives. From what I've seen, most normally get ported to PC sooner or later.

its pretty easy for nintendo to win, Microsoft and sony don't have that many sales on their exclusive at all.

Agreed, Nintendo GameCube and Wii got a lot of "unique" titles, but sometimes that can be interpreted as the main reason as the why those consoles didnt success greatly...

"Exclusive Games"

What part of that is misleading?

Anyway, it's not really a surprise. People only buy Nintendo systems for the exclusive stuff lol

These days that's not so true. Many people now buy the Switch to play fantastic games on the go that they couldn't play portably before, but still existed in the past on non-Nintendo systems. But yeah, for the bulk of when these numbers are applicable, that was mostly true.

How bundled is bundled?

Wii Sports is a given to want to exclude, as might be tetris on the original GB. Other bundles are trickier to quantify -- Halo CE for the original xbox for instance.

I would also have to wonder if eventual PC ports factor into this. That drops most non Japanese games from the running.

As for games on that list. I think I have played all of them or essentially all of them. Most I would not miss, would not really look down on someone claiming to really like games for not having played, and most were massively surpassed on their platforms (yes I would rate any of the rare platformers ahead of Mario 64).

Either way a curious factoid I would not have thought obvious.

Sony's massive lead this generation can also likely be attributed to the amount of exclusives on PS4. If people cared more about cross-platform games, XB1 wouldn't be way behind Switch in month-to-month sales already.

I don't know if I would go there entirely. MS seemed to massively misread the market and what it would take at the start of the generation. I would probably say that hobbled them in the eyes of consumers and devs and they never quite recovered. Depending upon how we want to view the Wii then last gen was the 360's, though Sony managed to catch up admirably as it went on, and for them to lose that kind of lead and good will was not just a quirk of the market.
All that said I still reckon this generation is exceptionally weak. I don't know if it was just last one being so strong or if something got lost but memorable titles this time around is so low it is not funny.

I'm less surprised about Wii Fit than I am that Wii Play actually took off at all.

Right. Like I want to play skyward sword with a keyboard or a controller. Wiimote kicks their ass. I'm not into overly complicated setups to get motion controls on pc either.
Bluetooth... Ir sensor... Dolphin... Not anymore complicated than syncing it to a Wii...

except they aren't??
you can emulate all the nintendo systems.
Not a valid response... "I can emulate it" is the laziest retort to so much in this forum. It's disgusting.

Greetings!

May I introduce myself: I am the inventor of the game "Menu Guesser DX EXTREME CHAMPIONSHIP" that came shipped with every WII sold. You randomly press buttons on the controller without looking on the screen, then you guess what menu is shown. You might say its garbage but thats the most sold game ever since it even shipped with the WIIs that were not bundled with WII fit. Yes and Nintendo used my clever design without paying royalties. Thats how they deal with indie devolopers... So all I have is fame.
