Shenmue was originally intended to get a full remake at one point, but ended up cancelled

Though Shenmue 1 & 2 was given a re-release earlier this year, in the form of a simple remaster, it seems that at one point, things were going to be much different. SEGA had originally planned to entirely remake the first two Shenmue games for the current generation of systems, but due unknown problems, the remake was cancelled in 2017, and the team was moved to doing the remaster that we would eventually see on August 21, 2018. Digital Foundry found footage of this original unreleased version of the game, and have done a video analysis comparing it to the remaster. Higher quality and sharper textures and other improvements in terms of shadow quality and lighting were added to the games. Things that were once flat textures have been changed to become fully 3D objects, and character models were also improved. The footage shown is implied to be a working build that wasn't finished, because of the unfinished nature of some of the changes, but this proves that at one point, SEGA wanted to remake one of their cult classic games, though due to time constraints and other development problems we instead got a remaster.

HD Remaster=quickest money grab
Remake=too much effort and too much investment

If you are Sega's CEO, you would make exactly same choice as they did.

Well sega rereleased Yakuza 1 and 2 before giving both yakuza 1 and 2 the remake treatment, so I can see them remaking shenmue 1 and 2

Who cares?
No one did back then. The successive ports/adaptions have been moderate (if any) successes. Let the game die, already. I swear, the game is way hyped by a very vocal minority that just can't justify all the resources invested.

The game had it's time. It killed an entire department at SEGA, helping the company to its demise as a hardware manufacturer.

This game is a paradigm, indeed.

Yeah who cares about a game that was revolutionary for the genre and helped shape a whole genre

Point being?
The game tanked, almost killed a company, and gets all this attention. The demographic for it are not worth the investment.

But hey, I'm not one to impose my views on anyone. It's just weird, that's all. Like people asking for a burger and then taking out the pickle.

WHY DON'T THEY ASK FOR THE BURGER WITHOUT THE DAMN PICKLE!

Who said the game tanked? The whole console tanked because of the Playstation 2. If the game is so horrible, why did they raise 2 million in 8 hours just to get a third game?

Just look for information about the game. It was a commercial failure. And 6 million for a game like this with all the people involved is not that much. And don't forget that the game is now Deep Silver's (possibly because the funding ran out)

But hey, it's coming, if you are happy, then I'm happy. It doesn't really bother me.

You know why they lost money on it? Not because the game was bad, because the audience was too small and the development costs were too high. That says absolutely nothing about the game itself.

Kazuma Kiryu probably would have defeated Ryo with one Tiger Drop Blow LOL!

No, but in all seriousness, I really have to wonder how Shenmue 3 is actually going to do critically in an era where the Yakuza games' popularity have become more known especially after 0's success. The facial animation fiasco really isn't helping Shenmue 3 in that regard!

For the Shenmue 1 stuff I sort of prefer the original part from an art perspective. I don't know if it is just because it is familiar (the dreamcast was still alive when I last properly played it but it did leave a mark). I can see all the extra details mentioned and pick out a few more but even so I am more drawn to the former.
