Hi!
If I understand correctly, exfat update is included in the 5.0 update and it's necessary to use big SD card? I have a 4.1 switch, Can I install exfatit using choixdujour and keep the 4.1 ? (I don't need to update via Choixdujour, i prefer to keep 4.1 for déja vu).

Also, when you launch a CFW, it's stock in the sd or internal storage ? Like, can i put my switch in standby, load some homebrew or backup on the sd, and just put it back again without turning off the switch?

Finally, last time i was here, ReiNX and RajNX where just out, and Atmosphere not release. Any news on CFW that i missed?

exFAT is in all updates however Nintendo will only let you install it if you're on the latest firmware.
You can use ChoiDujourNX to get exFAT on any firmware

RajNX is not a true "CFW". It is compilation of Atmosphere with Hekate as the bootloader instead of Fusee along with IPS patches (i.e. enables backup launching with .NSP files). The only CFW currently out include Atmosphere (unofficially available), ReiNX, and SX OS. RajNX is closer to a starter pack similar to tomGER's SD files which is superior to the former

Hey guys I'm a bit puzzled. I've read multiple guides and posts on rcm mode, devmenu, atmosphere and how to install nsp files.
I am on 4.1.0 now and don't have any demo or non physical game installed.
What I've gathered is that In order to be able to install nsp I MUST update to 5.1 because I won't be able to get the demo required in the while process otherwise. Am I correct or did things change? Is there any other way for installing nsp without updating. And if there isn't. What am I losing by updating to 5.1?

backup nand and keys with a game cart in switch.
will that cause any problems to the nand/keys?

I think you are confused about a few things.

1. You can update to 5.1 (and actually, I believe the newest FW is now 6.0), offline and unofficially, using ChoiDujourNX, a HomeBrew for the Switch and this will not burn your fuses. What this means is that as long as you have a backup of your Nand (Your Switch System), which you should have if you are messing with Homebrew, you will be able to downgrade to 4.1 later if you wish.

2. If you assume you need a demo downloaded from the E-shop, I take it you want to use Pokémon Quest to install Devmenu? You can actually use another HomeBrew called Tinfoil, to install NSP files to your system. You just need to have sigpatches enabled to play the installed games. Any of the currently released CFW have these (ReiNX, RajNX, The CFW that comes with Hekate 4.0 etc.)

Is it possible to restore a (usable) NAND backup that has everything except the USER partition (i.e. the biggest part of the Switch NAND), or is a full (raw) NAND backup highly recommended?

I read a post about it somewhere, being enough to backup the SYSTEM parts of the NAND to be able to successfully restore from, but i can't manage to find it :/

And yes, by choosing to backup "eMMC Sys", you have a backup of everything except the USER folder. But remember, you still need to backup boot0/1!

Thanks for clarification! Yes I guess after diving through many different forums I started mixing up some facts.

No worries, there's literally a ton of stuff to read up on when it comes to hacking your Switch

No, you don't need DevMenu to install NSP's. Tinfoil will work just fine for that. Also no, Tinfoil doesn't need any game to act as a "donor" or whatever you wanna call it. You just need to put the tinfoil.nro file in the Switch folder.

Then, run Tinfoil once, to have it automatically setup the necessary folders and then put your NSP files in those folders and run Tinfoil again.

I haven't really tried booting NSP's outside CFW, but I don't think they will work, because the sigpatches required to make them work won't be applied.

If that's the case, can you set it to launch into a CFW after 5 seconds or so? That sounds like as close to coldboot as we'll get.

You don't need a jig anymore, but you still need to launch payloads such as with a dongle.

Adding onto what @Draxzelex said, there is an autoboot option in hekate that allows exactly this, with a customizable timer to boot (pun intended XD)

Yeah since the hacking scene seems to be moving on so fast recently It was hard for me to figure out which is the state of the art for doing certain things.

So in order to boot the software installed with tinfoil I'll always need to do the hard mod to get into rcm and send a payload. I guess a regular data dongle won't do the trick either as it'll require some active components to send the payload right ?

Yes that is necessary for now, however you can easily leave your Switch in sleep mode and this way, you'll still be in CFW whenever you wake it up again. And sometime in the future, there should be a coldboot option for those of us who haven't updated our FW. This is partially why I suggested ChoiDujour to update your Switch, because your 4.1 firmware is vulnerable to an as of yet unreleased softmod known as Deja Vu.

I was referring to a post someone made about non full/raw nand backups being sufficient to restore from

I'm unable to find that specific post and want to be sure "that" someone has it right before i start messing around with homebrew/CFW/nsp.

I don't see why not as long as you are using a build of Tinfoil that supports DLC. The latest should work fine.

Well, I have not used it and it's the first time. I just wanted to know if Tinfoil supports internal installation and not only to MicroSD (If it is the default configuration where the NPS is installed)
