3DS firmware 11.8.0-41 out, is actually stable and broke support for Luma3DS - fix now available

IMG_0093.JPG

The 3DS is reaching its twilight years, with major first party releases slowing down. Updates to the system software are also becoming more and more uncommon. However, Nintendo sent out an update tonight, once more boasting about its beloved stability updates. This time, the claims were actually true, and the new update broke support with Luma3DS. Smealum, a major force in the scene is currently telling users to avoid updating at all costs, as doing so while having Luma will result in a "Failed to apply FIRM patch" error. For now, its recommended to stay below the new 11.8.0-41 update if your console is hacked, at least until there's a fix.

If you have knowledge with compiling files, you can apply the fix, but for the entry level user, it's advised you wait.

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

To update Luma I just need to replace my Boot file with the new version?

I just started using Luma3DS like a month ago and this is the first Nintendo update that has came out since then. To be honest I thought Luma could be updated over the air. Is that not the case?

I updated my old3ds to see if r4 cards still work with the newest update
I wanted to try if ntrboothax still works
But then i realised that i already flashed it once and restored it and i dont know if that works-

NTRBootHax is a bootrom exploit, firmware updates can't patch that, only hardware revisions. I actually thought the N2DSXL would patch it.

So how do i go about to do the update? And what about the posts about Smea, is that something to worry about when i update the console?

Edit: Found it, just had to replace the old boot.firm with the new one

Think this latest update is a bit different, but it seems to be working you only replace the old boot.firm with the new one. But it might be wise to wait a few days before you update, in case a better more stable version comes out.

The good thing is, this mainly effects freeShop installations, so FBI installations are safe because FBI uses the Application Manager for installations of CIAs.

So in a nutshell, users with 11.8 should install games via FBI and forget about FreeShop\CIAngel as a thing?

I wonder how Nintendo will handle those who won't update.

Oh dayum. Nintendo really got us there with the upgraded anti-piracy mechanisms for hacked systems. Glad I removed all my pirated tickets which were very few 1 or 2 years ago. xD Question though, I know it may sound like a stupid one, but should I wait until an official Luma3DS build with the 11.8 fix is released or can I use the nightly fix now and then use the official release when it happens?

If I uninstall freeShop and CIAngel before updating, update to 11.8 and use FBI to install games am I safe?

Yes you can use the nightly and update to the official release when it comes out
