Hacking Technical reason for why HEN sleep mode (whilst a game is running) crash is so drastic/different?

So i'm assuming i'm not the only one who has tried sleep mode whilst a game is running and come to try to turn it on again and it needing Power cable removal etc for it to start?

I mean, it really does seem to hose things up good, needing power cable removal, pressing power button a bunch of times (and it turns itself off or ignores turning on) then it boots eventually and does a disk scan, reboots again and then you're good to go.
I've had the ps4 crash on me a bunch of times in the past few years and, the worst that usually happens is turning it off and on again, doing a disk check..

does anyone know of a technical explanation as to why getting the ps4 to come back to life is such a faff? it really just feels like you're going through the motions to re-animate a corpse :)

HEN patches things in RAM (which goes away after a reboot), so when you place it sleep mode, the RAM is probably scrubbed or re-initialized from a suspended state when woken up, mucking things up. So, yeah, there's my technical reason right there - it mucks things up.

Personally, I always turn it off. It draws power unnecessarily.

Have you tried quitting the game before placing it in sleep mode?

That isn't a technical reason.

The patches stay in memory when coming out of REST mode. If you only allow USB charging and tell it to close applications, then when you come out of REST mode you can start the game.

My guess is that there is an additional signature check, which is only used when coming out of REST mode, that requires finding and patching.

Afaik it’s something to do with the version HEN you use and what it enables.

Holy grail worked fine.

Mira definitely doesnt.

Vtxhen (which mira is based on) semi/doesn’t even though a fix was put out to address this specifically.

As for technicals... idk: possibly permissions issue? No idea.

FWIW closing the games and putting just the system to rest, and then back out works fine, it’s just “resting” apps that causes issues.

Edit: Specter said himself “it’s to do with suspend/resume event handlers”.

Yeah, thanks for the replies. It wasn't as much a question about why doesn't suspend/resume work, but more of why does resume crash the system so monumentally compared to other crashes the PS4 does (or even any other system.... i've rarely come across a situation where powering down and up again doesn't just let the PC start back up again, unless there was a hardware issue)

The last time I tried suspending a game I did it on a press x to start screen. It came out of REST mode and it only crashed when I pressed x, as if it's only when reading from the hard drive. But only the game itself crashed.

If you have a USB hard drive plugged in when running the exploit, then the kernel crashes.

A game crashing isn't that big a deal, the kernel crashing is.
