VA-11 HALL-A comes to Switch and PlayStation 4

After being tentatively announced back in April, Sukeban Games has confirmed that their indie cyberpunk game, VA-11 HALL-A would be releasing on not only the Nintendo Switch, but the PlayStation 4 as well. Originally slated for "around Christmas", the release window has been moved to early 2019, and it'll be available as a digital-only title in the west, for $14.99. Copies of the game will be physical in Japan, and they will come with a full english localization for those that want to pick the game up in cart/disc format. VA-11 HALL-A originally released in 2016 for PC, and later got ported to the PlayStation Vita.

VA-11 HALL-A puts a twist on traditional point and click games with the story branching based on bartending decisions. Chat with customers and serve them life-changing drinks as Jill, a bartender at a dive bar frequented by average citizens in a cyberpunk future ruled by megacorporations.

With 24 drinks to concoct, there is no one correct drink to serve in any given situation, as characters are impacted by whatever cocktail they are poured. Every character that comes through has a story to tell which reveals more about both their lives and the futuristic Glitch City, run by the mysterious Zaibatsu Corp.

Cyberpunk Bartender Action? Just what am I to expect from a game with that in the title!? It's either gonna play like that dumb rootbeer tapper game I tried years ago, or it's just a parody title like Metel Gear. "Tactical Espionage Action"

Played it on PC and on Vita. Will probably buy the physical switch release as well, just to have the box :P.

It's actually a really enjoyable game if you don't mind text adventure typa games.

Well to be honest, it's hard to consider it a game when the main focus is on storytelling, just like visual novels. Sure it's classified as a game, but is like %10 player interaction on top of 90% you reading, and fancy picture portraits, with little influence to feel like a game. It's a experience.

To be perfectly honest: you're right, it's just a visual novel with a little "mix drinks" minigame of sorts. What made it so enjoyable for me was the art style, the setting and the music. (i usually consider VN's to be pretty boring, this one is something else)

Well I wasn't trying to talk down to the concept of visual novels, is just most of the ones I seen or consider didn't quite interest me too much, I could just be expecting too much from someone who normally consider a game something the player has more control and influence within the world and do more action orientated things like pressing more than one or two buttons or options. Also cause most of them are made with small teams and very little budget, compared to something like the Japanese Role Playing Game it just comes off as reading a book on a computer screen rather than playing a game. It wouldn't be a problem if they didn't conclude it as a game, just call it a visual novel.

As for one that has something I would find interesting.
  • Full voiced lines in the localized language (I mean all of it, not just a few)
  • More animations, not just static images
  • More backgrounds to see, not revisiting the same few places that aren't even more than five in the entire game
  • More interaction from the player allowing them to feel like their choices matter more and require thinking carefully or just more stuff to do in general
Games like the Ace Attorney series while mostly is a visual novel comes close to what I just listed. It plays like a game cause there is a way to lose and has more hostile reactions to mistakes the players make. They have lots of reactions and even animations, plenty of different places to see, but having more endings would help, such as continuing the game after a guilty verdict that can show unfavorable reliability in people you associate with, causing changes in what kind of clients you get for the path you take, maybe even turn bad or become prosecutor, who knows (just ideas) Other than that, it can use more voiced lines, not just from specifically produced anime video clips.

I can relate :)

also i agree will all the points you made, that would make the VN genre by far more interesting. Too bad va-11 hall-a is lacking pretty much all of those.
But stuff like voice actors, a less linear story, animations, and so on, means a lot more work for the developers. And especially the voice acting part would make the production of VN's a lot more expensive than it is right now, which would kinda make it impossible for a lot of companies to publish their game. (which is a shame, really)

Well it's a indie game, I didn't expect the same level as other games, without a publisher or public funding or a large team. I was only saying what would make me more interested in playing these types of games classified as visual novel. But there is other games that also was close to the same production value as this. Sim dating games like hunie pop is also a indie game, had just about everything I listed and is also a indie game.

I can understand the difference being that game had kickstarter and this did not. Making a game from your own pocket is risky considering if you don't get the funds spent making the game back from sales and then some, it's not good. Crowd funding allowing you to save most of your pocket change in favor of being able to produce something you know has been considered of interest from the amount made during the campaign. Of course I don't mean every indie game should be crowdfunded, but it does make a difference.

I'm just saying as a opinion, I'm a person who apparently has been know to lack attention & focus even by doctor studies. So if there is things about how the game presents itself that doesn't appeal to me right away, I lose interest and find it boring and even just ignore it. I can't tell you how many RPG games I play and skip countless lines of dialog just to get to the part when characters are talking with their voices and not just text, moving, interacting, doing some cool flashy stuff and look good doing it that makes me feel more interested in caring. In reality, it makes me sound shallow as heck but I'm not like that in real life cause I know the difference in games and real life.
