Hacking PS1 Game Compatibility?

As far as emulation goes, i'd like to play certain titles like Twisted Metal 4 on the go, or classic crash bandicoot games. Or even the original GTA. I never grew up with a PS1 because I came on planet earth around the 2000's but my Dad plays some PS1 games from time to time which got me into some certain PS1 games kind of.

In terms of compatibility though and performance how well does it hold up?

In terms of comparability, fantastic from my end. Though that can vary from model to model with the whole PoPs configuration and certain games. I personally used to play all three Crash Bandicoot games flawlessly on my PSP 2000, 3000, and GO model. GTA also ran great. I have no reason to believe twisted metal wouldn't run solid if majority of the PS1 library runs on it.

so it sounds like there are no issues at all? PSP has direct compatibility with PS1 games but i'm not sure if the ones not on the Playstation store will work or perform well, so that's why I kind of asked.

Just want to say this tho don't have a PSP yet, just thinking about getting one for the moment.

Everything runs fine I used to download isos off rom sites convert them to eboot and then run them. Never had an issue and I had over 100 games at one point, never downloaded any off the ps store

Anything that works on a "basic" PS1 should work in the newest POPS

(although R2/L2 are mapped to the analog stick, which isn't nice with some games, but you have 4 control configurations + any in-game settings)
(2 non-analog original controllers are emulated but choosing which one is active is annoying)
(install the CDDA plugin and prefer the BIN+CUE source format to support streaming audio)
(fancy controllers are not emulated, many games except gun ones and later analog titles should be backward compatible)
(serial and parallel port accessories are not emulated, no big loss)
(but you get a free modchip, lol, and optionally the PS2 fastloading mode)
(on a Go you can use a real PS3 controller to work around the L2/R2/analog issue with a plugin, and on Vita a PS3 or PS4 controller)

Oh, I kind of thought the PS1 didn't have the shoulder buttons yet, :/. Big fail on my part for not realizing that,
I could probably see myself using a PSP Go more othen because of the PS3 controller support though, I could probably make it work with a PSP 2000 but I would get the Go, or a Vita if it has that feature so in case it doesn't or has a lot of button inputs that could be situated I guess.

Of course I could also just get a regular PS1 but I think it would just be better to get the PSP because of how much support there is for emulators, how much software is on the console, and the handheld bonus of basically carrying the equivalent of maybe 20 old consoles at once.

Plus you get the tiny screen as a added bonus, so I guess PS1 games would look better or perform better due to aspect ratio and hardware?

Don't know about this feature, but it's use halfs of the sensor screens to control L2/R2 on kinda-emulated crossplatform games by default and this is not much better than using of analogue stick on PSP, especially with long hands.

No, only Go and Vita have bluetooth

You have:
"Original" pixel perfect mode
"Normal" enlarged to fill vertically (note that some games compensate for typical TV overscan, so there will still be borders)
"Zoom" ridiculously enlarged to fill horizontally
"Wide" stretched to fill in both directions, tends to suck with text but is nice for some games
"Custom" any intermediate setting between the first 3

on vita (adrenaline) you can also have upscaling filters, at the cost of input lag; Go however supports an external monitor

Yeah, get an external controller or one of those cases with "physical" buttons if you're serious about L2/R2

psp does the ps1 awesome, even multi CD games. psp go is (imo) the best way to go as you can use a ds3, and if you're ridiculously lucky, you can get the video out dock and play on a tv as well

Sometime you forced to change pops. And do not forgot that there is some games that need both analogue sticks and use pov buttons for different functions, thought their number not that much.
