Hello there. Back in the day I had an unbranded wireless controller for my old 1.6 Xbox. Recently I had to throw that out since the plastic became sticky and leave residue everywhere. Apart from being icky, this felt like it would not be the most healthy stuff.

Now, finding a replacement is not that easy. Searching for "Xbox wireless controller" or "original Xbox wireless controller" simply yields too many results for Xbox one and Xbox 360 (thanks Microsoft for your stupid naming scheme).

Does anyone have a decent source for affordable wireless controllers for the trusty old thing?

There are good wireless controllers by Logitech but cost 30€ - 60€.

yeah, found a handfull of those on ebay, but they are expensive. I was rather hoping for something more affordable.

I have 3 of these controllers and I don't recommend them to anyone. Both versions of the Logitech wireless controllers are junk. I have 2 of the original models (4 battery larger version) each with the left analog stick drifting, or the left trigger thinking it's constantly being pressed. The smaller version which uses 2 batteries is still usable, but it causes issues in any game that uses the left trigger. They aren't worth the money at all.

I use an AfterGlow 360 Controller (don't have an X360 but I use it with my PC) and it works great and feels terrific. Costed me $25 USD.

You could use some rubbing alcohol and strip that rubber coating off. I did that with my PS2 Dragon Quest Slime Controller for the same sticky reason - now it's got a nice shine to it.
