Friend list, streetpasses, etc. Will all of that be retained?
You won't lose any data with a CTRNAND transfer no. It's not a format.

Are there any major downsides of using Luma V7.0.5 instead of the latest version? Is it still possible to update emunand to the latest firmware?
You can't use the latest versions of Luma unless you install Boot9Strap. v7.0.5 is the "newest" one that will work with your setup. You can update your emunand all you want after you install Luma. Although if you want semi-permanent hax and be able to do away with the Emunand I would install B9S anyway.

I have an N3DSXL running A9LH, on 11.4.0. I would like to update to B9S, however my microSD is somewhat corrupted, in that it works without issue in my 3DS, but I am unable to copy files to it with a computer. I get the semaphore timeout error. I was, however able to copy my JKSV backups from the SD, which was a relief. I am thinking of doing one of two things. A): Create a new install of B9S on another microSD, (will it be possible for me to do a fresh install from 11.4.0, using the OOThax method?). Then upon successful installation, I will format the corrupted, larger microSD, and copy the contents of the newly B9S'd SD to it. From there I will install FreeShop and re-install all of my games, and then use JKSV (please tell me there is nothing stopping it from working on B9S) to import all of my backed up saves. The other option; B): I continue to use AL9H, and do not update the firmware past 11.4.0, as I cannot update Luma, and wait until my online functionality ceases, and/or my 3DS bricks, and then cry and curse the gods.
TL;DR: I don't know what to do ;( I will be eternally indebted to any of you talented folks on this forum willing to grant me some advise. Thank you..

If your computer can still read the SD, get a new one (from a real shop not ebay by the way) and copy the data over, and throw away the corrupted one. Don't continue to use a corrupted one if you have a choice, your data might disappear at any moment. Then you'll be fine to update to B9S. Also, Luma 7.0.5 is compatible with 11.5 if you want to update.

Stupid question, how can I tell what version of Luma I am on? I am unable to copy anything from my main SD (works fine in my 3DS), but I have ressurected an older SD that has far less of my games installed on it. should I update that to B9S and then format the corrupted larger card and copy the contents of the B9S card to it?

If you are on a new 3DS use microSD management from System Settings to copy files to your computer. I will send you a message with how to get it if you are on an old 3DS.

I updated Lumia and I also updated my 3ds to 11.5. When I restarted my 3ds in godmode I was wondering if there was something else I could have in place of godmode? What are my options for bootup?

Edit: Nevermind I figured it out. Also I'm an idiot.

from what I have read you cant do the CFW b9 guide etc if on latest system version.
but you can do it on an older version then update to current system info afterwards

Yes, thats exactly what I did. I ended up getting a New 3DS XL that had firmware version 11.2. I followed the 3ds guide, and learned I could use the soundhax method. At some point in the steps and after you've installed the custom firmware (cfw), you then update your system firmware from Nintendo.

Yes. If you have b9s installed it's safe to update.
but if yours on the newest current system you cant do it?
what can you do it up to if that makes sense :)
