think theres something else going on, usually will give you a "beep code" if your Motherboard is broken

it also gives beep codes when no cpu, bad cpu, and other problems (that is if your MB has a mini speaker)

personally think it is your videocard/monitor issue, check your cable to see if theres a bent pin, check your videocard's slot with a flashlight see if theres anything stuck in there to avoid contacts. starting up your pc without a video card does not, also shutting down a PC while it's doing something wont hurt your mb (unless if your flashing your bios) worse case senario is your HD is dead. videocards usually dont die from something like this.

unplug your videocard, blow into the slot, then plug in your videocard and make sure its 100% plugged in and correctly.

next thing to try is unplug everything, including ram and cpu and re-assemble your PC it could be that you knocked something lose durring what you were doing.

if your motherboard has a on board videocard, plug your monitor in it

check your manual or online see if theres a beep code or speaker on your motherboard and listen for odd beeps durring boot process

also try other videocards as mentioned above, unplug a device or 2, like cdrom or something, when my power supply was crappy and when i was overloading it i had the problem of pc not starting randomly (starts for 2sec then shuts down) if too many devices were drawing power.

*Edit*
dont mess with bios without visuals, thats equal to asking someone to sledge your motherboard if your MB doesnt have a recovery method.

Yeah I'm pretty positive this is a graphics issue, definately try to get your hands on another video card (also possibly try another moniter) before you declare it a problem with your motherboard.

Well I checked my computer, and as far as I'm aware there's no onboard video, and I don't have another video card to test it with as far as I'm aware. If we do, I'd have to look around the house for it.

My mother thinks it just might be a video card issue too. If that is what it is, I'm going to be extremely relieved.

**Although, nothing really does seem to be wrong with my monitor. It turns on and displays the message "No input detected." If it was a monitor issue, it wouldn't of shown that would it?

unplug the gfx card and plug it back in.

There may be some dust or crap in the slot.
If theres alot of dust in your computer this could be the problem...

ALSO: check your monitor - it could be turning itself off... like mine does...

That smell you mentioned earlier.... it could be a capacitor. When capacitors pop they have a really bad smell. When you do electronics you get used to the smell. When ever I repair stuff for friends I always sniff it for popped caps(capacitors).

well the first thing I'll say is don't try this again unless you know what you're doing. that's not very helpful though...

try unplugging the cable at the back of the power supply for half an hour then plug it back in and fire it up. this has worked for my computer a few times and I know it sound a bit crazy but you never know. worth a try.

these kinds of problems suck and I only try the basic things like replacing video card, other parts etc. after that I take it to a PC shop to get fixed, it's just not worth the time and trouble sometimes and the PC shop can have a warranty on their repairs depending on what they do. I'm friendly with the owners of a PC shop in my area and they fix my comp for $20 if I've got a problem, some places are really overpriced though.

if you can't afford that then try posting in a PC forum where there are lots of experienced people to help, they may have seen your exact problem before.

I'm sure you'll find some good advise here but you may get better advise from a PC forum.

good luck

A bad and/or incompatible PSU could be the cause of your box not POSTing. Replace the PSU, remove all components but the ones absolutely necessary for your machine to boot and try again.

It's also possible your motherboard's busted.

Sounds like a motherboard problem to me (the lack of beeps at startup is a good indication of that)

If you could tell us what motherboard/GFX card you have, that would help us help you =D

(no worries, motherboard/gfx are around the same price, replacing one HOPEFULLY wont be too much of a burden, in terms of finance for ya =\)

My dad has oncoming cancer medication practically nonstop and it's outrageously expensive each time, and we could barely pay off a $800 electric bill without help from others. I can't buy shit right now.
