Hey all. Wish I didn't have to make this thread, but unfortunately, I don't have time anymore and I'm still at work. Sorry for the text wall, but I need to explain everything I can since my time is short.

I got Pokemon Sun and Moon, was about to get the Munchlax event quick since tomorrow (possibly actually today) is the last day to get it done, only to be greeted by the ever so unwelcome forced system update screen telling me I have to install 11.2, so now I can't get the event done. I wanted more time to get around to installing A9LH and Luma3DS, but now I just have to do it if I want to get this event.

Anyway, hoping you guys can give me a quick crash course of help so I can do this tonight.

I have an O3DS, currently has 10.3 firmware. I already installed the Homebrew Launcher using browserhax a long time ago, and I was using it to launch httpwn so I could get the 2016 pokemon events. I hope that takes care of the step of needing HBL, at least, I think that's something I need to install A9LH.

Also, I've previously built a temporary hardmod setup, so I have firmware backups of my O3DS when it was on 9.4, and I think also 9.5.

So first questions:
1. If my system gets bricked installing A9LH, could I just reflash my 9.4 / 9.5 firmware backup and try again?

2. If I really need to, could I just update to 11.2 (I don't know how this will affect my HBL install), do the Sun and Moon event download, then reflash my firmware with my 9.4 / 9.5 backup and then install A9LH?

3. I suppose I should ask if there's a quick method to fool the game into thinking I'm on 11.2 already so I can just get the events without installing 11.2 or A9LH right now?

A few A9LH questions:
1. I read part of the guide already, and saw the part about something having a high failure rate if you have any DSiWare stuff installed. Unfortunately, I do have a number of DSiWare stuff, and some have save data I want to keep, notably, the music programs I got. Is there a way to back up all that data, then delete the DSiWare so I can complete that step in the guide, and restore it after the whole installation is done?

2. I did ctch a few comments in a related thread someone made after installing A9LH recently about losing your data and stuff, and making sure not to skip the backup step. Is this the step to keep all your game saves and downloads and stuff from the SD card?
2b. Could I just back up the SD card and copy the game data back over?

3. Is there anything else important I should know about before installing A9LH, or is it all in the guide? I'm honestly not sure where to begin since I haven't had the time to really go over it.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I look through the guide... I wish it was easier.

I'm sorry to bug you guys like this, but since I may only have tonight to install A9LH and Luma, whatever that does, I feel I should just ask all the experienced users so I can do this fast and do it right in the short time I have. I also want to be sure I can still recover my system using my old backups just in case something goes wrong.

If you guys have any advice on doing this right and getting it done as quick as possible, it'd be very helpful. I would search if I didn't have a very short deadline...

As always, thank you guys very much for your help in advance!
1. Yep

2. You can install A9LH on 11.2, it actually doesn't matter.

3. ctr-httpwn https://github.com/yellows8/ctr-httpwn

A9LH Questions:

1. IDK, i thought that problem was resolved

2. Yep and Yep

3. It's all in the 3ds.guide

I just got home. If the game only needs 11.0, I wonder what firmware the new black 3DS has. I only need to get the event, then I'll have time to take my time installing A9LH without f-ing something up. I still have my temporary hardmod stuff as well. Mine was a set of wires with tiny beads of solder I filed a flat spot on and then used masking tape as a guide to hold all the wires on the correct test points while I did the backups.

Do you still have to do a bunch of Nver stuff to get 11.0 to downgrade to 9.2 before installing A9LH?

If you just want the Munchlax, I'll legit get one and trade it to you.

For Nver, I would think you'd want to do that to 'update', (9.2 to play 11.2) but if you get the five (mint, eshop, friends, etc.,) 11.0.2-035 Nver files, you can skip updating all together.

Maybe jump on the bandwagon before you can't?

I'd been purposely avoiding updates specifically so I could install A9LH at my convenience, which seems to be never.... though reading the guide again, I'm at "installing A9LH" and it sounds so much easier now than it did the last time I was reading about it.

I still want to kow if I need to use soundhax to launch homebrew launcher... I mean, this guide covers everything, but I already installed HBL about 9 months ago and have it set up to launch when holding L while powering on. Do I need to re-install HBL (and uninstall the version I put on it with browserhax 9 months ago) and use soundhax for this?

No, menuhax should work fine for an entrypoint until you update. Once you update, you will need to update your entrypoint payload.

For simplicity, I would use soundhax. (Does soundhax work on firmware lower than 11.0? I'm not sure. If it doesn't, I would update to 11.2 and follow the guide, including soundhax.)

I would. You wouldn't want to take unnecessary risks, right? For the other matter, I'm still wondering if you want this Munchlax?

Thanks for the offer, but I'm kind of a collector and like keeping as many of the actual wonder cards as I can for these pokemon games, that's why I'll get them on my own game.

But thanks!

Ok, I just finished reading all of the guide, definitely an easier read than last time.

> The guide states that anything from 9.0.0 to 11.2.0 is compatible with soundhax.

I got my O3DS, which is on firmware 10.3 still, and has menuhax installed to launch HBL. If I want to start right away, I can just hold L and boot into HBL and then continue the guide from after the page about installing and launching it with soundhax, right?

I might just go ahead and uninstall menuhax and reinstall it using the soundhax method anyway, but I don't know yet. I only use it to run httpwn and that's all, so I don't know if that would break if I have to restore to this firmware. However, it would be up to date.

Side question, what's a good lightweight torrent program I can grab? I haven't used one since my good XP computer died in 2011.
Edit: if there's a Firefox plugin, I might just stick that on, I just need it to get these files quick.

You're welcome.
To answer your S.Q., I use zbigz. com. No installing. Very lightweight, right? There might be a FFplugin, but it might give you problems like downloading the file, but not the right file, even with the plugin installed.

I have one more question quick, in this other thread, I saw people talking about how they lost their Friend Code, thus losing their friend list, etc... is this still a thing, and how can I prevent it?

Just update to 11.2, get your munchlax, then follow 3ds.guide to put CFW on. Because of some new exploits (safehax+fasthax) you can now run Decrypt9 and backup your NAND and do a 2.1 ctrtransfer without having to pull your 3DS apart. But for now, CFW can be easily installed on the latest version so just update, get the munchlax, backup NAND, downgrade, arm9loaderhax, and restore NAND. Just follow 3ds.guide exactly and don't goof off, but if you follow the guide you'll be fine.

1. I guess you could, but I suggest creating a NAND backup of your current version (or even update then backup) so you have something more recent.

2. I don't remember whether 11.2 patches browserhax, but a new homebrew entrypoint called soundhax (soundhax.com) lets you use the stock 3ds sound application to run homebrew, and it works on 11.2.

What about the FC thing I asked above your post?

I'm looking at updating menuhax, not sure if I need to do that first. Mine is from like March 2016.

I believe the friend code thing going blank is for the people who didnt follow the guide correctly by not creating a nand backup and then having to do a ctrnandtransfer resulting in loss of data

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also I would reccomend updating to 11.2 then grabing the munchlax then doing 3ds.guide theirs even menuhax on 11.2 and 11.1 now.

I suppose after I install A9LH, I won't need menuhax for running ctr-httpwn anymore anyway, save for if there's a problem with an update and it's recommended not to update.

I hope the hell it is not going to take 4 hours to download the 2.1.0 ctr-transfer file...

I'm looking up a way to do a NAND backup of my 10.3 firmware before I update, if I update.

Hello again, all. I'm a bit late, but figured I should report that I finished installing A9LH and Luma3DS with my 10.3 firmware 3DS Tuesday night, and it bricked my 3DS.

il_340x270.233004651.jpg

Unfortunately, I couldn't find an image of a 3DS with a brick skin for my joke, so this is the best I could find on google.

I'm just kidding, I got through the steps, everything was pretty easy. Only problem I had was when I went to inject FBI in place of hs.app and didn't realize I had to use the D-Pad to change "hs.app" to the FBI install app name. I thought it would show a whole list of all my options on screen, so that was my bad. My 3DS was updated to 11.2 at the end, as the guide instructs to update, and everything works fine! So glad I did this.

Thanks again to all that helped and assured me on things!

My last question for this, after reading the cleanup part at the end of the guide, I just want to be sure that it's safe to remove these files / folders from my SD card:
> "a9lh" folder (and all contents, which I will back up... OTP is already backup up)
> "cias" folder (not sure if I should save this for installing future CIAs)
> arm9.bin
> arm11.bin
> SafeA9LHInstaller.dat
> safehaxpayload.bin

I want to be sure it won't cause any problems if these are removed. Also hoping the answers serve as future reference for others.

I honestly in my opinion you should keep them in case of any inconvenience in the future know what I mean you pretty much need every single thing on your list (expect the a9lh folder back that up my friend and you are good to go) and that should be it

My idea was to consolidate all those (except cias because I think I need that to install CIAs in the future) into a single folder and move them off my SD card onto my computer, just to open the space.

It's 32GB, but this isn't what I asked, I just want to know if I can remove those if I want to. If I need them, they'll probably end up back there when I get the latest versions of whatever the files belong to anyway whenever I do need to install these programs again. And if I really need the files at any time, they'll be on my computer, too.

arm9 .bin I believe you need and arm11 but everything is else can be destroyed and I was asknig bc I have a 32gb and I don't really mind it being on my sd card as I have a hell lot of space so my answer to you would be just leave

According to the guide, it says all files and folders can be removed if not in this list they provide, but I wanted to double check. All I listed are not in the guide's list, so as far as the guide is concerned, what I listed could be removed. I just like to keep stuff cleared if it's not needed, or move it somewhere else, just in case I need to do fresh installs and not get things mixed up by accident.
