I cannot understand why most of you buy screen protectors. I understand you are smart people, but its a false economy.

On the new DS Lites, as with the old DS, there is a layer of film that protects the main screen from being scratched.
Now, on the DS, this layer was extremely thin, flimsy and when scratched up enough, it was hard to view behind this film. The DS film was about 70% transparent in my opinion.

However, on the DS Lite, the film is almost 100% transparent, and more resistant to scratches. I have had my ds lite since uk launch and as of yet, it has only very light scratches on the film. Press this film down against the "hard screen", and you will realise how thick, strong and resistant this film is. It is DESIGNED to take scratches. The only reason why they endorse screen cover products because anything that makes money is no bad thing.

For example, if Nintendo put 2 layers of film over the touch screen, I think many of you with screen protectors would still buy them. Why? I cannot work out.

Other than re-selling, which seriously, why would you want to do that, as this is the final DS model?, it really is not neccessary and you should give your money to me to buy a new stylus or case to actually protect the DS Lite from damage its shell will not protect it from.

Other than that, please give your reasons for buying screen protectors

I bought a screen protector for my DS lite because the screen started getting scratches on it. I don't like having scratches on my screen.

The stylus won't scratch the screen, but if you have any dust or grit on the screen that gets under the stylus, that can scratch it.

Extra screen protectors are replaceble. If one gets scratched too much you can just take the old one off and replace it. Et voila, a brand new screen!

I don't own any screen protectors, but normal use (if it can be called that) of ouendan and EBA through the months left many circular scratches in the center of the screen.

If it cannot be replaced, who cares? You buy screen protectors so that when they are all scratched up, you can just peel them off and it's like brand new. To answer your question as to why buy them, some people just like to take care of things they spend money on.

I bought some for my NDS phat.
Though they came with the Pelican stylus.

My screen already had a buncha damage on it due to some friends smoking on it. (you can fight with me all you want you crazy smoking poeple, cigarete smoke does infact damage most plastic materials! So stop smoking on my crap ya bastards!)

So I applied the screen protectors and then the scratchs were no longer visable. They were at a point in wich I couldnt see much of anything in the center anymore.
Though after awhile the screen protectors got scratched up too jsut from the stylus itself.
I heard about the damaging pelican stylus a little too late sadly.

Screen protectors are a bit useless with a screen film already inpllace, but whats gonna protect that screen film?
Some poeple just like to have the origonal paid for parts to stay 100% scratch free as much as they can.
Even though the screen protectors add a sticky annoying residue.
(well, mine didnt, but some do I think)

Also sometimes its just there to reasure the user that their investment wont be scratched itself.

Screen protectors arent really made for touch screens though.
They are alot more usefull with basic screens.
Makes it easier to wipe off dust and what not.

I still wish nintendo found a way to make that touch screen more flat and smooth. Its still pllaced under the plastic part.
Collects dust like crazy :/

But still, screen protectors are cheap, so its not like its a real loss or anything.
Kinda a nice cheap option.
Expecially if you have a little cousin who likes playing with semi sharp objects and gets ahold of your DS >.>

ah....I guess you've never seen a demo DS at the store....the screens are so bad you can't even see thru it!

The way I see it......I'd rather have a screen protector get scratched up and be able to replace it than have the bare screen get scratched and be stuck with it that way.

Yes, the bare screen is very tough, so if it does get scratched, you would rather deal with that for the rest of your DS's life, or be able to pull off a damaged protector and replace it? Gee, let me think about that......

....screen protectors for the win.

I don't have screen protectors, Ive had my DSlite since launch, its got a few scratches on the touch screen, but they're so fine and small you struggle to see them when its turned off, and when its on they're invisible

I agree with the folks bringing forth the following points: being able to "fix" the scratches if deep ones appear, and that dust, grit, and siblings really can damage the screen.
Perhaps those who do not have scratched screens after a year live in really clean areas/are sole players/are really lucky.

Okay don't come back here crying if you managed to get your screen scratched. It doesn't have to be you, maybe your relatives or your friends who did it.

And it's not like the screen protector is like $20 or even $10, it has only cost me $5.

PS: I don't get sticky residue from using Hori's and Taku's screen protector.

The thing about scratch is, you don't feel the need for a screen protector until you get an ugly one. I don't have any scratches yet, but I see potential easy damage.
Why do you get flu vaccine when your body already has some immunity against it? (I personally don't get flu shots because I'm healthy man at mid-20s, but I might still catch it) same applies to NDSL touch screen =D

I personally don't use them. Someone up higher was saying something about people liking to 'protect/take care of' their investments. The fact that I do take care of my DSL means that I DON'T need a screen protector, but I digress.....

I have small scratches but they're only invisible with the DS off.

Dont get me wrong. I have a screen protector for my phone, because it is a weak plastic glass screen that will get scratched and make the screen harder to view.

I dont have a Screen protector on my watch, as it has been coated with diamond plastic alloy (I think), so it never gets a single scratch, unlike many watches, and even rolexes out there.

I take care of my DS and accept there are certain parts of it, I cannot protect, such as micro-scratches that affect every ds lite. However, you invested in a machine which adequately protected itself from screen scratches.

Many of you, if you do get scratches on your screen protector, are not apt to immedeitely replace them at the first sign of a "invisible, unless looked at in the right light" scratch. Because you know it makes no different to gaming.

Therefore, there is no difference between having an extra protective layer, and not having one, except the former have spent more money, which eventually adds up, if like some posters have said, they simply remove the film and apply a new one.

I guess if you have smaller siblings that can cause damage to the screen, than it is perhaps understandable. I am usually the sole user of a ds lite, but I exercise constraint in who I lend it to.

I agree with deathfisaro. If you don't have any nasty scratches on your screen you won't think you need them. But in the unfortunate event that you do get a big ugly mark you'll sooo wish that you had bought them. Prevention is better than cure as they say.

Well but you have to acknowledge the fact that those who buy screen protectors do it by choice. It's not like they do it because so many others do it.

I think dropping few bucks for screen protector has bigger merit than the cost, so I do it. Say, I measure between couple more hours of gameplay before charging and the cost of larger capacity replacement battery. I'm pretty happy with the battery life as it is, so I won't buy it even if the replacement battery was like $3. It's that simple.

Should I get a screen protector? -> My DS was perfectly fine without protector for past 2 months -> Why would I spend money on protector? forget it.
OR
Should I get a screen protector? -> the DS I bought last weekend got ugly cut on the screen -> need something... -> buy screen protector to prevent another

P.S. The following is really off topic, but the reasoning I made couple posts ago and combined with this, you won't convince me enough not to get a screen protector.

And if you are a spoiled rich kid like me (I made 900% profit on stocks, I won't say how much, but it's in 5 digit US$ range =P) you really don't care about saving couple bucks on screen protector. But wise rich people do save on small things, that's not me, at least I'm not rich. I have a friend who made million US$ at the age of 27 doing stocks, he frequently buys digital cameras, 40+" LCD monitor, PSP, more than one NDSL, and stuff. But he lives in a small basement unit and doesn't own a car. Well I live in basement unit, don't have a car, don't buy camera, monitors or expensive gadgets, I can spend a few more bucks on my precious

I was on the school bus and while waiting for it to pull off to take me home, I thought I'd play a game of Meteos. As I was tossing meteos up, I FELT two grinding streaks (you can feel the vibrating of the scratching of the screen). My heart skipped a beat and sure enough, two of the nastiest, color-warping scratches were there. I put it away for a week, which was about how long it took me to get some Hori screen protectors for it. Now I can't even see them under the protection and I feel so much better playing games like EBA and Ouendan. Hell, I even got an S on the last stage of Ouendan on the hardest difficulty.

I'm thinking it was glitter on the stylus that was at fault. I had been messing with some friends earlier that day and you know how glitter likes to hang out for weeks until it all goes away. Still, screen protectors are pretty necessary in my opinion. No matter how much you baby your DS, you'll slip up and slice a mark or two into it eventually.

They make you a better DS player!

Edit: Mind you, this is on a DS Lite.

Yes NDS need screen protector , i alone was thinking it don't need , but i once saw a little scratch , (i used stylus delicate way though) , then i went into panic i visualize my precious NDS , how it could look for one year , how it could have scratches (if i will forget to use gentle stylus by playing a game ) i souldn't live with that so i killed myself

just kidding i bought 8 protective seals (hope it will be for 1 year) , in my country (poland) , on internet auctions protective seals cost less than 2$ (of course the cheaper nonames) , but i earlier bought dragon protective seals for more $ and i regreted it , cose protective seal had a sticker , when i taked it off it left nasty glue sings on playing screen area , so i say dont buy dragon protective seals , better buy lot of cheap ones , members of polish NDS forums say the same .
