Mortal Kombat!!

For some weird reason which I cannot explain, MK rom worked much better if I just loaded tmnt rom for a second then immediately loaded MK. Slow down only occurred right before FIGHT, and also the shang tsung scene suffered, but apart from that OK.

However, I can confirm that Xerofalcon is right, mkla4 runs like a dream without loading tmnt first. Many thanks!

I have attached the latest dol build which

contains pointer to mkla4 for near flawless mk1 aracde experience
included is the tiny.mak file I used to build it
it is the latest build where the video option HW Bilinear Filtering works, which makes the graphics look smooth. I wander if this will improve the look for CobraX83's monitor...
Thanks for this! You have literally made my day. MK and MK2 run awesome, it is a dream come true to run these arcade classics on my Wii. Just three questions:

* Is there a way i can enter service mode so i can rise the volume in MK2, for example? Or maybe import and use the nvram from PC MAME, for example.
* Is there a way for me to change the default input for mkla4? Buttons are wrong for the classic controller.
* Would this approach allow in the future for an MK-core where MK3 and UMK3 are playable?

Yes, button configuration can be mapped within retroarch input, regarding service mode in mk2 it can be accessed by pressing ZR->Dip Switches->test switches->volume adjust. Mk2, mk3 and umk3 have a speedhack in core options, but after some minutes or fights the sound becomes really awful (with or without the speedhack), crackly and distorted for about a minute or two and then becomes stable again until crackling reappears. I guess both titles (mk2 and mk3) are more enjoyable if played in midway arcade treasures 2 for the Gamecube. Mortal kombat on the contrary runs excellent.

MK1 rev 4 runs on a different, easier hardware to emulate than 5.0 on wards (which is T-unit), hence the sound crackling. BTW with a quick pause/unpause, the sound issues should disappear (as it was with the OLD pcmame builds)

Dlading and testing later!

EDIT:

God Im AMAZED that old Wii can run MK1 and 2 so, SO GOOD!!!

As expected MK1 rev 5.0 (T unit) has audio issues. But 4.0 runs 10/10

In vs mode is flawless (no pun)

MK2 slows a bit on the forest stage and armory. The audio issues SEEM to appear always at the same time (?) on the Shao Kahn stage/cpu rival before Shang Tsung and yes, last a about a match (1:30 min) to go away.

Very usable for serious vs mode again.

Midway Arcade Treasures aren't that good. They have speed differences and a BIG sound issue (1 full sec delay!). Also no MK1 there :(

BTW I CANNOT load mk3/umk3. Any tip or is a special romset?

Another question: Are those 2 games doable in 100%? What will it need on Wii to emulate them 100%?

Soon a vid!!!

EDIT 2:

Vid uploaded!

A few notes:

MKII has NO shadows on the floor? (not that it bothers me, I would actually trade that for game play, which is IMO fantastic), BUT remembers me of the shadow issues with Midway Arcade Treasures 2, which has blinking shadows. They used mame code? (I prefer no shadows at all if someone ask me)

Mame Pause/Unpause DONT fix the sound crackling as it does/did on older PC mames.

Control response using a Classic Pad is GOLDEN, I also used a PSX pad modded with an arcade stick and adapter and worked good too (ye, went there).

I would like to encourage the question: COULD the Wii have a performance like that of MKII (even with audio issues) for MK3/UMK3?

Question II: Can I make self booting or stand alone games with retroarch? I mean, like launch a game bypassing the emu menu and play it like an standalone game? I think it can be done with WiiFlow/USBGX launchers... But using retroarch?

Thanks in advance and high hopes this can take fly again!!!

EDIT 3:

Gonna open a thread on retroarch forums to see what can be done.

Mmmm I just put the MAME core into RA 0.9.9 and ran flawlessly.
Haven't tested with 0.9.9, but when i tried to use it with 1.0.0.2, the pad stops responding (GC pad or Wiimote).

BTW I CANNOT load mk3/umk3. Any tip or is a special romset?
I can't either. Maybe they are disabled?

I'm curious about this too.

This would be GREAT. Or even a DOL built only with the MK drivers, to save some RAM space, that could maybe allow a future gui or something.

Gonna open a thread on retroarch forums to see what can be done.
Did you? I'd like to follow the discussion.

Sorry for the late response, I was away XD

Maybe MK3/UMk3 dont load due to the ROM size. It maybe too big for old Wii ram +(

I havent openend a thread at Libreto because IDK why the forum dont let me recover my old pass/open a new account.

You're right, it's too big.
This one has MK driver only: mame2003_libretro_1-3-MK or mame2003_libretro_1-0-2-MK
MK3 and UMK3 work ok.

And this one too : mame2003_libretro_1-0-2
It has drivers from the previous test.

I almost forgot imame4all_libretro_1.3.
Again, it's just a test build. Maybe quite buggy but a good thing since it's a bit lighter than mame2003.

wHOA WHOA!!!
So this means that
1) MK 1,2,3 and UMK3 can be played with the MK core?

2) MAME 0.78 games can be played with the MAME 2003 core?

There are many notable arcade games that were either laggy or unplayable with the FBA core.
Stuff like:
  • Outrun
  • Toki
  • Xain Sleena
  • Shinobi
  • Robocop 1
  • Robocop 2
  • Sly Spy
  • A.B. Cop
  • Wonderboy 2
  • Raiden
  • Blood Bros
  • R Type
  • Asterix
  • Bad Dudes
  • Dark Seal
  • Ed Randy
  • Joe & Mac
  • Osman
  • TEHCAN World Cup
  • TNMT 1 & 2
  • Wizard Fire
  • WonderMomo
  • Tengen Tetris

1) Yes. Even enjoyable.
2) Mame2003 core is the new name. It's mame 0.78. Imame4all or mame2000 needs 0.37 roms.

Thanks for the list. I can't find a list of which games are supported in mame only. That'd be useful...

GOD! Im hyped!

@Wiimpathy my friend I cant seem to load the cores on RA 0.9.9, they are only compiled for 1.0.0.2 Onwards?

EDIT:
Imame dont load for me, neither on 0.9.9 nor 1.2.2

I can load both "MK core Mame" and Mame 2003 but when I load ANY rom the emu kicks me to HBC, both in 0.9.9 & 1.2.2.

The first core MAME 078 you guys provided on the first page, loads beautifully MK 1 and 2 on both 0.9.9 and 1.2.2

What I am doing wrong?

EDIT 2: Still no luck, anyone can confirm the cores are working and on wich RA version? :(

Use latest RA wii 1.3.0 for imame4all, for the other cores you can use RA 1.2.2. I tried imame4all and works very good, finally I can play Splatterhouse in 240p mode.

Thx Zero, WHAAAAAAA I must be doing something wrong them. Maybe the romset?? (Mortal Kombat games specifically)

EDIT: I can only find RA up to 1.2.2 where can I find 1.3? Nightly Builds?

EDIT 2: Found 1.3.... Nothing. Tested all combinations possible and nothing. Nada.

Maybe its my romset?

BTW some new 1.2.2 cores glitches the menu config, wow it really is messed up.

For Imame4all (mame2000), you need a different romset : 0.37.
These builds are retroarch 1.0.0.2 and 1.3. I launch the cores directly with WiiXplorer or wiiload for testing. The goal is to use them in Wiiflow anyway.
I also had a problem with roms returning to Homebrew channel. That was making me mad, and I still don't know why. I had to copy the roms once again. They were kinda corrupted. Old hdd?
Deleting retroarch .cfg, or even the whole folder is a good idea when you test different retroarch versions.
Now mame 0.37b5 (aka as imame4all) can be compiled?! great! thanks for the builds wiimpathy
It hasn't been tested yet, I guess. There's a typo in the makefile : _DHW_RVL instead of -DHW_RVL. You'll also have to comment out #include <pthread.h> in minimal.h.

So i tried mame2003_libretro_1-0-2 and mame2003_libretro_1-0-2-MK using MAME 0.78 roms (took me all night yesterday to download the 0.78 romset). I get thrown back to the HBC upon loading a rom, unfortunately. :/
No code dump, just exiting from RA.

I also tested the imame4all with the 0.37b romset (i have it on my phone as well), Toki and Blood Bros games played good, sound was off however. I went to test more but the typical RA 1.2.2 issue arose, i.e. locking me out of the game, wiimote controls not responding.

So my question is am i doing something wrong with the first two cores? I had the correct romset.
Failing that, would a 1.0.2 version of imame4all be possible?

Thanks for the list. I can't find a list of which games are supported in mame only. That'd be useful...

I'll work on a bigger list of notable non-FBA arcade games if you want.

Hey man, would you like me to upload my custom 1.0.2 RA?

To be honest, the few roms I've tested with mame2003 are from a mame 0.84 romset.
All these romsets, the retroarch versions, the bugs in libretro and cores is a nightmare. Seriously, I wish good luck to the devs testing/maintaining all of this.

A list would be nice indeed.

Hey Wiimpathy, is it possible for you to compile a FBA core for 1.0.0.2 with just the PGM driver? I have a theory at least some of the shmups are small enough and should load and run and the only reason it didn't last time the PGM core was isolated was because it was compiled incorrectly (even a tiny game like frog feast wouldn't load)
