just wondering wat linux distros people are using and why they prefer them to other distros

im currently dual booting arch linux and ubuntu edgy
ubuntu for its repositories and ease of use
arch for the power and speed

Kubuntu here. For what all people say about the resource hogging KDE does, I find it works wonders on a three year old laptop I've taken custody of and clearly was getting tired.
It has exceptional hardware support. I managed to find drivers for proprietary wi-fi USB dongles I never thought I would find them for, and even though the computer clearly is a tired old piece of shit, it performs flawlessly for whatever little tasks I need it for.

ubuntu is easy for me. i've been a windows user forever though. it's taken some time to get used to it, but i prefer a linux-based OS now.

SuSe OS 11 for me, works pretty darn great. But video drivers don't work since I hacked my X800GTO to a X850XT (The Sapphire version doesnt really exsist so conflict arrises.)

I'm using arch linux exclusively.
I've also used mandriva, debian sid, ubuntu dapper&edgy (in order beginning about 3 years ago).
Mandriva(mandrake when I used it) was nice when I first started, but once I tried apt, I found it's urpmi and graphical package manager apps to be very slow. I also got frustrated when trying to compile apps, because this distro generally recommends against compiling and doesn't provide much support for it.
It's drake tools where also just.. bad.

Debian sid I tried when mandrake moved over to a 1 year release cycle. I stayed with it for a few months, but left because I found ubuntu seemed to be easier to find stuff for, more stable, and just as up to date(because of it's popularity). Ubuntu is very similar to debian, it is debian based afterall.

I'm using arch because it is noticeably quicker than the other distros, it also has better support for source packages (abs and pkbuild !) and other things such as ck patched kernels. It's binary package repositories and aur (source of pkgbuilds) are a powerful resource!
It's also easier to configure and maintain because it is so much simpler than debian and redhat based distros.

I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 at the moment (6.10 For a while, but i had problem with firefox browser)

1. it's easy to install apps with synaptic
2. very simply gnome menu

Personally I use OpenSuse 10.2. I've tried Ubuntu but it just didn't 'feel' like Linux for some reason. I did like it however, and the community is great but it's just not for me.

Suse is.. well it's Suse nuff said.

Jesus... Nobody here uses GenToo? This System is the most bleeding edge system you can get from all of them as the applications are all compiled from sources instead of delivered as precompiled binary packages. Compiling is simply writing "emerge mozilla-firefox" into a console and waiting until the magic is done.

I'm using GenToo on my Deskop machine, the production Developer Station PC and various Servers I administrate ( private one as well as business one ).

I had gentoo on my laptop( for 3 years), but the hardisk got f*cked and I had to replace it, since I need the computer badly for the college and I am quite busy now I installed xubuntu on it, and I really got impressed, fast to install, fast to run, excellent hardware detection.... When I have the time I will make some room for gentoo again

Well I'm running Yellow Dog Linux for now but only because I have a G5 PowerPC 64-bit CPU with 128-bit registers

and yes Dragonlord compiling from source is damn fast

I love it!!! Oh other distros I have been running are SuSe, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu & Fedora Core

Ubuntu seems to get a lot of attention lately. Have seen a couple of people fiddle around with it yet though myself I did not put my claws on it yet

At the moment I've got Gentoo, but thinking of going back to Slackware. Those two are the only distro's I considser using.

I'm using Fedora Core 5 on my laptop but since I have loads of problems (sound card hardly works, wifi & network issues, incompatibilities...) I'm usually under Windows XP.
