Here's a quick guide for those who want to try out Kojima's stock trading game.
Starting the Game
Once you've completed the 5 tutorials you can choose to play Story Mode or Expert Mode. Both means you work with shares (or "stock") but with Story Mode you play a board game too and have to reach the goal first.
The main trading screen in both modes will be the same but lets look at the screen that appears when choosing Expert Mode.
Five years of real stock market data is used in the game but not all of it is used a once, only a selection. So here, you can choose to pick the time period yourself (right button) or make it random (left button).
The Main Trading Screen
There are lots of tools to help you predict stock changes but you'll have to be very literate in Japanese to use them. Fortunately, you can play this game without them too. All you have to know is how to look for stock and how to buy or sell them.
Finding Stock and Adding to your Favourites
There are various ways to find the firm with the right stock you want such as by alphabetical order. You can find Nintendo under "ni", Konami under "ko", Capcom under "ka" etc. But if you're not really looking for anything particular, open up the menu and select the second option as circled here.
Draw a trend line as you done in one of the tutorials then click start.
Wait for the results screen, pick the one you like then add it your Board by clicking the top-left button.
You'll then come to the Boards screen. Tap on one of the spaces then the "Add" button to add the stock to your favourites. You can then easily switch between these stocks using the mini version of the Board at the bottom-left of the main screen.
Reading the Charts
Now that you have stock, you want to know how well it's doing. On the main screen, tap the Chart button to find something like this on the top screen.
Stock prices change every minute so there are different parts to the graph to help you predict what will happen in future. You can tap the arrow button below the Sell/Buy buttons to speed time up. In Expert Mode this skips a day and Story Mode it skips 30 minutes.
Orange line is the Annual Trend Line showing how well the stock you've selected is doing over the year.
Green line is the Daily Trend Line showing the stock's change everyday.
The red bars show increases and the blue show decreases in hte stock for every minute that passes.
Buying and Selling Stock - The Money Making!
First, you must know the stock market is only open at certain times which are 9-11 and 12-3. Remember the times or you might miss out on opportunities!
So, once you've selected the stock you like, tap on the Buy or Sell buttons on the main screen. The screen below will appear.
By tapping on rectangle 4, you can choose to place an order for one day or one week. Buying or selling stock isn't instant because you'll need someone who buy from or sell to you first which is why you must pick a time.
To the right of the screen, you can see how many shares other traders want to buy under "Buying" and how many they want to sell under "Selling". The middle shows how much they are selling at or what price they're willing to buy at.
If you want to buy or sell stock quick, tap on one of the prices in the middle with whatever you want to do next to it. For example, in this screenshot I want to buy stock quickly so I select the line with 100 stock that's selling at 1240 Yen each.
Once you have set the price you want to sell/buy at, tap the number 1 rectangle to choose how much stock you want. You can only buy as much as you can afford of course.
Finally, tap the Order button to place your order and wait for your stock to sell or get set under your name if you're buying. A window will popup on the main screen when the order has gone through. If nothing happens after a day or a week then, you'll just have to place your order again.
You can check how well the stock you bought is doing by tapping the "Stocks in Possession" button above your Board. This shows as a blue percentage if the price has gone up or red if it's gone down.
Good luck!
And that's all there is to playing this fun stock simulation game! "Buy cheap and sell high" as the staff at the Stock Trading Cafe says!
Story Mode lasts for 3 in-game months and Expert Mode lasts for 120 days before you get graded. Good luck in picking the right stock and making money!
