I still find it funny that we can buy the movies but have no way of watching them yet. I don't see either HD-DVD or Bluray surviving.
Yeah its true...UMDs do own...they come in a nice clear plastic case with a nice scratching window which has absolutely no protection for the disc. UMD is also a proprietary disc which cannot be used in any other platform and the PSP is not compatible with a TV which makes UMD Movies only working on one platform and that is the PSP. Unlike DVDs where they can be watched everywhere and converted for your PSP, UMD Movies are stripped down DVDs that only work in the PSP.
Dude, I still got one of them 8 inch floppys from the 1970s that only holds 322 KB. Well, okay, my dad gave it to me, but I'm gonna hold on to it forever.
8" floppies?? I've never heard of those, but I do have some old 5.25 floppies around here somewhere, and I believe they have the 3 original Duke Nukem games.

As for this HDDVD vs Blu Ray I am still sceptical, failure perhaps not but I can say with conviction that it will not be a quick changeover:
there is nearly no benefit to switching and as you say the amount of supporting hardware and software is drastically limited.

DON'T MOCK TEH 8 INCH FLOPPY DISCS. Without them, I'd never be able to play Granny's Garden on the BBC in primary school.
On a serious topic, UMD could've been a serious media but you can only play them on one device. The PSP. More to the point. The fact that you're paying for something that only has the movie itself and is more expensive then the actual DVD which has more is just stupid. That and the pro duo memory sticks getting cheaper means movies can be stored on them. Blu Ray will still exist as long as the PS3 still exists since that's what the games will go on. BTW, I saw a HD-DVD porn up for download on bittorrent once. 16gb? Damn. Looks like the future of downloading HD-DVD rips will be out of reach unless higher speed broadband is common place.

Didn't they say that UMD is supported on the PS3? Didn't they plan to make writable media form of the UMD? (which means UMD drives for PC). But other than that, UMD is pretty worthless, unless they could use Xvid codec on it to fit full high quality movies on to it. Blu-ray will only succeed if PS3 will, which is unlikely.
