I don't know whether the VHS would fail... mainly because it was before my time...

My response to the topic is: Yes UMDs DO pwn but there is a flipside. In a PSP (the only thing which runs UMDs), there are two ways of reading data, either through the mem stick, or through the UMD. One consumes more power and decreases the battery life further (as short as it is), and the other keeps the battery life pretty decently. One has the capability of storing up to 16GB of data (the PSP firmwares only allow up to 16GB) which is readable and writable and the other is a solid 1.8GB of possible data, only readable from the PSP.

I prefer mem sticks over UMD

Provided that you have a CFW PSP

Actually back in the day (I'm only 22 so I'm not claiming to have been there) there was the thought that VHS would fail, because it faced the technologically better beta format.

Only big difference? VHS was much cheaper, so people were okay with the lack in quality in order to have a much cheaper format.

Just a random tidbit, when my parents bought their first VHS player, it cost them $1000 on sale with my mother's then employee discount.

Well HD-DVD has failed, Microsoft has admitted that they were defeated by Blu-Ray.

Since when did MS care about HD-DVD? They never intended to use it as a game medium, and the drive was an addon. Meh. The one who cries right now is Toshiba

What a lot of people don't realise is that Sony is not the only company behind BluRay ... there are over 20 companies in the BluRay group, including Philips & Disney.

That means the money has got to go around to everyone. All those companies want a piece of the pie, and all of them need to re-coup their development costs, too.

People seem to forget that all new media playback devices were expensive in their day ... DVD players are super-cheap now, but they were "Bambi's Momma"* less than a decade ago ... so were VHS & Betamax players, CD players ... and so on.

Also, Sony need this format to succeed, as every other Sony-related format has failed.

ATRAC, MiniDisc, Betamax, UMD ... even Memory Sticks are only holding on by a slim margin.

Also, what many of you younger ones don't know is that there were other formats back in the day, besides VHA & Betamax ... V2000, anyone?

I still wish HD DVD would have won. As of its death, it was a better medium that is updateable. Now it is useless.

Phail.

Apple paid microsoft a bumload of money to build a new and better OS. When the time came to hand over the code MS just never showed up to the meeting.

I'm sure that's wrong.

While wer're on the old stories rumours, Large companies used the less efficient windows over Apple's OS so they wouldn't have to fire so many employees.

It definitely was not Apple. They bought 86-DOS (QDOS) from Seattle Computer Products. It then became MS-DOS, which lead to Windows.

On topic, Sony did everything right from the get go this time around. People complain about "dirty" tactics, but it's business people. Toshiba also bought out studios (too bad it's was too late).

It really depends on how you look at it. I feel that sony is EVIL EVIL EVIL because they did not let me chose which format to purchase. Also, HD-DVD is the better format. There is no copy protecting and there is only 1 version. That 1 version has as many features as the yet unreleased version 2 bluray.

I am going to buy an HD-DVD player when they get down to 50 USD and a writer when they get to the 100-200 USD range. Check the sig for when I will buy bluray.

Sony bought this format war after loseing EVERY single war before this. They did not let the consumer chose. I will not let a facist demonic company dictate what I buy. I will never buy another sony product.

Im glad blu ray won this. They are the better format just for the capacity alone. I cant wait for the blank writable media to get cheap so I can start using them for backups.

I hope you're right....unlike the price between pro duo's and every other flash mem.

The 360 Add-on drive is $50, it is plug and play with Windows. HD DVDs are now $10-$15, making them cost about as much as regular DVDs (while supplies last, which isn't going to be long). I'm buying them up as fast as I can.
