Unfortunately the compatibility for this sucks ass and it's buggy as all hell, so this isn't exactly a big step up, they're just kinda cutting out the middle man. But hey, retail PS2 games on 3.55 firmware! Yaaay...

I have always been able to play PS2 games on my PS3 (OG 20GB model lol) and with Swap Magic I could even do the whole USB loader thing.. not that I have done that as it seems like more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

I wouldn't mind putting up with the bad compatibility if I could get this method to let me use a controller. My PS3 controller simply stops working once a PS2 game launches. Hmm.

Is this the same method that was posted on Ps3hax months ago?? or is this a different method

That method appears to actually downgrade the console to 2.50, which didn't have a hardware check to decide whether PS2 games should be playable or not. In the method I posted, you can stay on your current firmware version and the console appears to be tricked when it does the hardware check.
there is also the cobra usb dongle which gave access to this emulator long before

The most interesting thing about the Cobra thing to me was that is let you play PSP games on the PS3? (At least that is how I understood it.) With all this new hacking going on I have my fingers crossed that someday I will get to try out a hand full of PSP games that I missed out on.

except that the compatibility is very poor via software alone. the ps3 simply isn't powerful enough for the software to take the role of both software and hardware.

and thats why it was never released, it does show they were working on something on pure software emulation though without the GS2 chip (they already got rid of the EE chip on some of the last ps3's that could play ps2 games)
