Yay first crash that I didn't see coming

Got "area! al error app_entry is not within the apploader" when booting Megaman Network Transmission, image was shrunk however, no disc. Gonna test 1:1 copy with disc.

Edit: random crash I guess, worked fine after another try. Started getting this error with Update 5 randomly.

Why are people so obsessed with loading from retail discs? Isn't the whole point of Dios Mios being able to not have to use physical discs? I know that some games need a random disc, but in general, there really isn't a point, it there?

uhh why would you want to be restricted to ONLY usb loading? What if you bought a new game and didn't get a chance to rip it yet? What a friend brought over a game? What if you wanted to play a game that had audio streaming issues? What if your hard drive broke? There are many times why one would want to use a disc and it doesn't make sense to have to install a clean MIOS just to do that. It may make sense if you're a pirate, and don't have any retail discs to begin with, but for the rest of people, it's useful.

And Audio Streaming is working :P
You can use DIOS MIOS to use the different options (Force 480p, use Wiird/ocarina, NMM, select language, etc.)
Maybe it can be done without DM? but like he said, you don't need to reinstall the real MIOS.

WTF? I thought implementing audio streaming into Dios Mios was deemed impossible, since you're using 96kb to run from USB in the first place....

So let me get this straight, let's say I have Star Fox Adventures.iso on my USB hard drive, I pop in a random gamecube disc (any old disc), boot the game from USB Loader GX, and I get audio streaming!!?

cyan meant/said audio streaming is working on retail discs. which is why someone might want to load from retail disc..

See that's the thing that doesn't make sense to me. Normally, a Wii can load gamecube games that have audio streaming on them (physical disc), so why run the physical disc that has the audio streaming through Dios Mios when loading it through the disc channel does the same thing? It's a moot point, it defeats the purpose of using Dios MIos. I don't use physical discs (unless the game needs a random disc in there to bypass games with problematic boot partitions) since my disc drive is from a 2006 Wii model (don't want extra wear and tear).

What's the difference between loading an audio streaming game via the official Gamecube disc channel versus loading it via Dios Mios?

This is what I'm not understanding. Loading via DM is no different that using the disc channel.

Because playing it from dios mios will cause some audio/music to not play. Running from disc will allow that same audio/music to play.

The point is that when you install DM it replaces the MIOS so the disk channel ALSO uses DM to run retail disks. If DM can't do retail disks then the disk channel can't do retail GC disks either.

Additionally, running the retail disk through a loader adds the ability to force video modes like progresive and regions as well as NMM.
Also, hopefully future releases will be able to force widescreen and use cheats on real disks.

So I load Star Fox Adventures that's on the USB hard drive, with the Star Fox disc in the disc slot? Still not 100% clear but whatever.

No, you load StarFox Adventure from the Disc, using the "Launch Disc" option in the launcher (USBLoader, DMBooter, etc.).
Don't launch the dump on your USB.

You asked why someone would like to use a retail disc with Dios Mios, so I answered "because (with retail disc like you asked), Audio Streaming is working".

If DIOS MIOS didn't allow running disc (retail, or backup+modchip) like it was the case before the update5, then you would have to reinstall the official MIOS v10 whenever you want to play from disc.
Switching between real MIOS and DIOS MIOS each time you want to change the loading method is a quickly done, but you end not remembering which version you have, and can be avoided by allowing both USB loading and Retail disc loading.

why using a real disc instead of loading from USB?
Real disc has Audio Streaming working.

Maybe: You can Swap disc?
I didn't try yet.
To try yourself : Load disc 2 and start a new game, you will be asked to insert disc 1.

What's the Advantage of using DIOS MIOS instead of MIOS to launch a game from Disc?
You don't need to re-install another .wad (MIOS DIOS MIOS) each time you want to change your loading method.

What's the advantage of using DIOS MIOS with Disc from an USBLoader, instead of using the DIOS MIOS from the Disc channel?
  • Real Disc Channel runs the game with default settings:
  • No language patch (it use the language from the console)
  • Need a Real Memory Card (no NMM support)
  • No Ocarina
  • No forced video mode
  • Launchers run the game with user's settings:
  • Force a different language than your console
  • NMM support
  • Ocarina
  • Possible to force 480p in games without 480p native support option

MIOS enables the Wii to have Gamecube compatibility. DIOS MIOS is a replacement for Nintendo's original MIOS. If you try to load a GC disc through the disc channel, it will use whatever version of MIOS that is presently installed. So, if you've installed DIOS MIOS, then the disc channel will use crediar's DIOS MIOS to load GC discs. Thus, if disc support is broken in DIOS MIOS, retails discs will not work through the disc channel (or a DM loader), leaving USB only, and no audio streaming playback.

However, with DM update 5 audio streaming is supported through retail disc, just like normal MIOS. So, disc support means that people who want to be able to play streaming audio games like Eternal Darkness and Star Fox Adventures can use their original discs through the disc channel, just like a normal Wii.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for clearing that up, but it's a real shame DM can't run games with audio streaming. Devolution is supposed to support it, but who knows how he pulled that off.

Not sure how tueidj managed to get audio streaming working with USB. I've asked about it, but no details have been forthcoming. It is sort of the final piece of the puzzle for Gamecube USB loading.

Only a few modchips correctly support audio streaming with backups, and people with a working modchip are also able to play backups of audio streaming game discs with DM update 5.

Hi there!

Can anyone confirm that Star Wars: Bounty Hunter works fine with Dios Mios, please?

I get a black screen everytime I try to load the game. I have the latest version of Dios Mios, on a PAL WII, PAL TV and composite cables.

Hopefully tueidj can release a cMIOS that has full compatibility. DM is pretty great but how DM doesn't play some stuff DML does is kinda weird to me - but I'm no programmer so I just dunno.
However he did it, I understand it was kinda processor intensive. I doubt his solution would be feasable with GameCube mode's slower clock speed (PowerPC) and much less on something that has to run on an ARM processor as I understand the MIOS does (like the IOS's do)
If he can do USB loading for GC games but using the Wii's full power, that would be pretty damn impressive. :)

Pal version works, uncompressed.

Unlike DIOS MIOS, Devolution is not a MIOS.replacement.. it is a Wii application that uses regular IOS....

I will probably stick with DIOS MIOS for a long time. Iirc, didn't tueidj make a post saying "50% of games will be perfect, 40% will have issues, 10% won't work" or something to that effect. I'm sure compatibility would improve over time, but DIOS MIOS has well over 50% of games working perfectly. And considering my wii can't read a few of my gamecube discs anymore, that'll be another reason to stick with DIOS MIOS.

@the_randomizer, your signature tells me, you are using the same HDD as I do. It works without problems so far, but with DIOS MIOS the Wii powers off (while playing GC) after some time (sometimes after 5 minutes, another time after 30 minutes...)
I've prepared it, as the compability wiki describes:
Install the drive on a Computer, Update its firmware from WD website, install SmartWare software, on SmartWare Software disable the Hibernation/Power Saving mode (it will be applied directly to the firmware) - Uninstall everything from WD, Backup the driver folder on the drive and remove all other folders from the drive - Partition as required and use
Do you have issues too? As I said before, all other things (Wii backups, Uneek, Homebrew) work perfectly with this drive.

I wonder if it is possible for DM to invoke a periodic read of some sort in order to keep all drives from sleep spindown

Strangely, Dios Mios is very fickle for me, here's what I've learned about it:

-Will only boot if USB HDD is in Port 1
-Won't boot when the Wii is turned on after turning it off when finished playing a Gamecube game (either this or I have to disconnect then reconnect my HDD before it will run Gamecube games again)
-Won't boot if the Wii is turned on from standby (the light has to be red)
-Won't boot if I return to the System Menu from a Wii game
-Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures errors after intro
-Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess freezes after catching a fish

Maybe it's either Port 1 or my hard drive, but it seems to be much more fickle for me than it does for others. I use a Seagate FreeAgent Go-Flex 1TB
