Gaming wii u to output 4k?

i was wondering, according to wikipedia(& everyware) wii u supports hdmi 1.4.
wikipedia also states that hdmi 1.4 which supports 4k resolutions correct?

Just because it supports hdmi 1.4 doesnt mean it will be powerful enough to actually play games in such a resolution.
Odds are that the new xbox and ps will be able to though. (and they will probably be as big as a HTPC and more noisy than a PC)

Do you realize how powerful a console would need to be to output 4K? That's 4 times full HD, so it requires 4 times the processing power you need for full HD. And how many actualy full HD games are there on ps3 and Xbox360? From what i have seen, there's only a handful, the rest is either just 720p, or 1080p with half the width or some other cheat, so they can say that they are using 1080p, while they are not.

also i doubt they would call the next xbox 720, i think it would be something something like xbox sence. or microsoft swirl or some stuff. xbox 90 degrees anyone?

or they could ditch the whole xbox name to begin with since there being more kinect orientated so maybe it will just be called microsoft loop or 90* or sence

Why are you clinging on to names? The Wii was called Revolution pretty much until a year before release(or something like that). New xbox and ps wont be released until 2015/16. Of course they will have codenames.

PCs can do greater than 4K, you need a multi-GPU setup to do it.
4k is around 8 million pixels
2560x1440 on 3 displays = 11 million pixels (27" res)
2560x1600 on 3 displays = 12.3 million pixels (30" res)

EDIT: I don't believe that the next generation of consoles will aim for 4K for gameplay but will be "capable of" 4K output for video content.
They have to get 1080p right first, even then 3D gaming on consoles will be limited to 720p due to the HDMI standard of 1080p 3D being limited to 24 frames a second (per eye).

I don't think Wii U will handle 4k at least through gpu hardware

Seeing the R700 chipset specs:

It does programable microcodes and DX10-like hardware rasterization.

Unless the GPU was heavily modified *and includes* at least 2 physical gpu cores, I doubt it'd do 4k and optical 3D (much like 3DS's 3D method)

I highly doubt any of the next gen consoles will do 4k. Even if they did, who has a 4k tv right now? A lot of people still don't even have HDTV's.

I really hope it doesn't come to ultra high definition consoles. Modern PC games are way too often just tech demo's to push new video cards. Here's to hoping the WiiU won't be the bait to make us buy überegagigaplasma-3D-HDMI-whatever televisions the size of your mom's ass. :rolleyes:

Nice tech demo. However, it looks exactly like any given first generation HD "look at me spitting out fancy nature stuff" demos. Or even a DVD tech demo. Because all in all, the difference is only really noticeable if you're glueing your face to the screen.

(okay, I admit it: that's not really true. with HD, you can actually see the make-up and grey hairs of television actors. Boy, is technology a blast or what?)

sure they support it but they can't do it you'd need three times the hardware i have and there's no way the game will run in 60fps!!

4K is pointless. Constant 60 fps at full HD, that on the other hand is something i expect from any next gen console. Or 2 players getting different pictures via 3D technology(half resolution due to 3D though), that would be nice.
