Apple Complete iOS Jailbreak Guide

Sorry to make a random post but there's something I'd like to say.

This guide has been around for over a year now(Under Dialexio's command. And almost a year for me).
I'd just like to say thanks to everybody has spent time reading it. Pointing out errors, and who gave up tips.

It's been a pleasure helping you guys. I'm pretty sure I speak for both of us on that.

Anyway, here's to another year! And I hope to be of assistance for a lot longer. =^___^=

jan0 has released a homebrew patch for the SSL vulnerability that Apple addressed in iOS 4.2.10/4.3.5. If left unpatched, hackers can intercept information that you send online, such as bank account numbers (for online banking), credit card numbers (while shopping), and your address. Just fire up Cydia, and look for "isslfix" to browse the web more safely! If you'd rather see pretty pictures, the guide has that, too.

8/14 UPDATE: Since they are pretty outdated now, I am considering removing iOS 3.0 through 3.1.2 from the guide. It's nice to support more firmwares versions, but I don't see a reason to keep them on the guide. After all, iOS 3.1.3 is just as easily jailbroken as iOS 3.1.2 now, but also holds some security benefits.

8/19 UPDATE: Seas0nPass was updated to include an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 Build 8F455!

Is there a untethered jailbreak for 4.3.5? I am currently using an iphone 4 and I believe I am on the update with 4.3.3 but I rather not update if there isnt anything avaliable yet.

As bowser stated, 4.3.4 and 4.3.5 do not have untethered jailbreaks unfortunately.

But since you're on 4.3.3, there's no reason to update. Just install "PDF Patcher 2" and "isslfix" in Cydia, and you'll be just as secure.

This guide is not outdated. It always said that you could get a tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.5 using redsn0w.

Says who? This is THE best and up-to-date guide on the internet.

Kind of off-topic but is Apple now selling factory-unlocked iPhone 4 (GSM version) in the US?

Yup. Apple's been selling the factory-unlocked iPhone 4 (GSM model) in the United States for a few months, actually. Apple sells both colors at the unsubsidized price of $649 for 16 GB, and $749 for 32 GB. (That's why those iPhone plans cost a lot!

)

Which doesn't even matter because carriers will sniff you out and charge you the extra data fees. It's almost worth it to pay up front with the data plan and then unlock it.

One problem though. You cannot as of the current iPhone 4 baseband unlock it.

Seeing as how the notice about magenta-colored firmwares could be missed, I duplicated the message that says tethered jailbreaks are marked in magenter [sic]. Thanks tagzard for bringing this to my attention.

I also realized that color-blind people may not be able to see magenta, so I added underlines to tethered configurations to make the guide that much more accessible.

9/19 UPDATE: redsn0w 0.9.9b1 has been released, and has a totally new interface. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I can't update the guide for it just yet. The interface was simplified tremendously, though.

10/7 UPDATE: ~~It's my birthday today. Say "Happy Birthday" to me or I won't update the guide any more!~~ Apparently, jailbreakme.com is not to be trusted any more. Saffron and Star will be moved to jailbreaks.me.

it doesn't look like it, I'm afraid. You can keep your eyes peeled on jailbreaks.me to see when it's up.

I would not use jailbreakme.com even if people report success; an unknown entity is now behind the site, and could add malware to the process (pretty unlikely, but certainly possible).

Saurik bought jailbreakme.com from it's previous owner, so Saffron will be hosted there.
But I don't know what will happen to jailbreaks.me, maybe it will host something else?

In any case, I am waiting to hear about performance on the 3GS and an untethered jailbreak.

Guide

Download redsn0w.

Download the IPSW corresponding to the device and firmware you wish to jailbreak.

Run redsn0w (Windows users, run it as an Administrator and in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP2). Click on Browse and point it to the firmware you just downloaded.

redsn0w may ask if you have a newer model or not. Answer this truthfully; failure to do so may require a DFU restore. (If you are uncertain, you can determine this information from the section "Determining Your Device's Bootrom Version.")

The program will present some options. Select "Just boot tethered right now."

Now, you'll need to turn off your device (if possible; this doesn't matter too much). It's time to get ready to enter DFU Mode again.

redsn0w will now provide instructions to enter DFU Mode.

Your device will flash white, then show a pwnapple. It is booting up now!

When you're updating the guide for iOS 5.0 (which I assume you will), this section can also be simplified a bit: Now if you simply rename redsn0w.exe to anything with "boot" in the name (e.g. "tetheredboot.exe"), it'll automatically boot a tethered device when run, without any need to choose any options etc.
