Andy Whitfield, whose impressive physique didn't hurt his lead performance in the Starz series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" has died in his home country of Australia after a battle with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Whitfield was 39. In a statement provided to Associated Press, Whitfield's wife, Vashti, called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny morning" in the "arms of his loving wife." Whitfield -- who was born in Wales and lived in Australia -- was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in "Spartacus," a hit original series for the Starz network that was known for its graphic violence and sexuality. Whitfield was preparing for the show's second season when he was diagnosed 18 months ago. And in January, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the series' lead role. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in 'Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.[/p]

Bit sad really, I didn't really like Spartacus, but I liked him in Gabriel.

So he played Spartacus?
Never seen it, bar the occasional ad.

[Insert joke about there now being more than one Spartacus]

It's a darn shame because the show is kickass. Hopefully it'll still be after Mr. Whitfeld's death, because the first season was a freaking blast.

What a shame sparticus blood and sand never got another series with Andy Whitfield (It is doing with another actor). I think they started on the second series when he was clear and the cancer came back. I did enjoy the prequel of this though Sparticus gods of the arena how Crixus became a gladiator. Maybe goes a bit too far in what roman times were really like but well worth watching just for the incredible story lines. R.I.P.

I see there are many people like me, who don't remember actors names, only faces

I only remember a handful.

I only remember a handful.

It's hard to remember an actors name when they always use different names. I never watch the credits and I almost never care to look up their real name.

I watched all of season 1 sparticus from 6PM to 6-7 AM one day; epic show

Same here, never bother with credits unless I know from internet reviews & people's comments that there is secret ending/trailer etc etc.

Only actors I remember are the ones WORTH remembering, like DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L Jackson, Vin Diesel, Heath Ledger (R.I.P

) etc

I haven't watched any of his work, but it's still sad to see a promising actor in the midst of a successful career die of such a terrible affliction.
