Destructoid reports:

QUOTE said:
In what may be the weirdest system update ever, it simply adds the ability to watch the OK Go music video "White Knuckles" in 3D. After the update is complete, the system reboots and you'll find a "3D movie" icon on your home screen. This isn't a dedicated 3D player or anything, it simply launches the OK Go music video.

The update also includes "enhanced communication features," which Destructoid's reporter couldn't make sense of. Assumedly, this update will attempt to kabosh original DS and DSi-compatible flashcarts, but Destructoid doesn't speak to that assumption.

I really hope it blocks the flashcards!
Edit: Before any smart ass wants to say something. I am not against hacking nor flashcards on the 3DS in the future, but with that said, I am against them on the 3DS this early.

I'm pretty sure that this is the same update as the Japanese one which makes the communication update just a StreetPass update just like in the Japanese one.

Nintendo should be aware at this point (i think they are) That flash carts can only be temporarily blocked and they're just filling their block list with crap in the mean time. the original DS is done and they need to let it go.

I'm thinking maybe they found a bug under certain network situations, and decided to throw a music vid in because they're nintendo. it's also possible nintendo saw a vulnerability in the wireless communications and patched it up before someone tinkered with it? But the bug theory is most likely.

i dont think Nintendo will block flashcarts outside of what they've already done.

Nintendo aren't really in the habit of adding features, and especially not "throwing one in, you know, because we can and we love you guys

Please explain how it matters in the slightest...
As has been said a million and a half times by now, hey only work in DS mode and possibly DSi mode for the iEvolution. IT HAS ZERO EFFECT ON THE 3DS HARDWARE OR 3DS TITLES.
In fact, I'd be willing to be that flashcards working on the 3DS IN DS MODE is possibly boosting sales in the 'Own a Flashcard but is hesitant to buy 3DS" group, especially when you consider how many people are trading in DSi's and selling DSLites to get money to buy the 3DS.

Nintendo doesn't subsidize the price of their hardware, so they're not losing money by overselling consoles (in fact, they consistently UNDERSELL their consoles which is why Nintendo consoles are always the hardest to get and when they say "Sold out everywhere" they MEAN "Sold out EVERYWHERE" unlike certain other companies who shall remain nameless.)

It does have an effect on the titles. Because the console is hacked early on, developers/publishers might get cold feet , because there are so many people out there who can get their games for free. And we all know that this has happened with the ds. For example, ubisoft has stated that it has lost a lot of sales to piracy, if this happens to the 3ds, they might go to the ngp and abandoning the 3ds altogether. Another example is capcom not bringing Ace attorney investigations: Miles Edgeworth to the Netherlands, because so many people there would pirate it.

There are probably a lot more publishers and developers that might take on the same standpoint as the companies, thus the 3ds might not have so much 3rd party titles and it may flop. So, piracy CAN impact the titles on the 3ds, if you look at the 3rd party companies.

Back on topic: Probably a regular update, it might or might not block out flashcarts, but we just have to see if it really does when people have properly tested their flashcart.

Devs like Ubi lose money on the DS because of the shit they put out. Simple as that. At the end of the day there are still going to be more people that pirate then buy good games than there are people who just leech off the "free games"

What....? Imagine games just like most shovelware sell like hotcakes. Every soccer mom buys them for their kids. The reason we keep getting shovelware is because they sell, we wouldn't have this many if they didn't.
