Hacking What IOS's are safe to delete

I got my wii at release, so it has every ios released for ntsc-u wiis (except the ones for 4.2 and 4.3)
So im beginning to worry that my wii system memory will run out of space

I know you arent supposed to delete ios's, but do i really need the ios's for old system menus? (im using 4.1 now)
Is there a way to check how much space the system memory has left?
Should i even be worrying about running out of space?

Do not delete any IOSes under 200 and even then don't delete those either because the ones above 200 are your cioses for homebrew. IOSes are maybe 10 blocks of internal memory if even that. Even if they were safe to delete, you would not get any significant gain in free space.

If you're worried about free space, buy a nice 4gb or better SD card, make sure you're on system menu 4.1 or 4.2, and keep all your extra or nonessential channels on the sd card loading menu. Internal Wii memory is not a problem with that set up.

But i still dont understand why i need to keep something like IOS30, or IOS20 when its for system menus that i dont even use anymore

Depending on how you use your Wii, you could in theory delete everything bar the SM IOS, tho you would probably wanna keep 58 too for the HBC and your cIOSes. This is assuming that you only use your Wii to play USB backup games and Homebrew.

You could use any title deleter and remove the news & weather channel and also the photo channels, that will add some more blocks back

If you load from USB, you can delete all ios except the system ios and a cios to load usb. You can delete all non hidden channels.
This is a good way to brick your wii if you f-it up.

Deleting IOS will not get you back any space - the IOS are stored in a "reserved" area of the NAND which doesn't contribute to the block count in the Data Management feature! Furthermore, the stubbed IOS are really only a few Kilobytes in size (less than one block, which is 128 kb), so they don't matter.

I would imagine Nintendo is fully aware of what happens when they stub their IOSs, as Helsionium said, IOSs live in a completely part of the storage than where your Virtual Console games and Saves live. So if Nintendo realizes that they are getting close to exceeding their pre defined storage space, they will have an update that removes the extra stuff that doesn't need to be there. So stop worrying about this, and start worrying about something that really matters, kids these days, don't care about anything other than if they will have enough space to install their games...BTW, why is this in the Hacking section? Pretty sure this isn't a hack, if anything it is system maintenance.

I stubbed the ones i listed (4, 11, 20 and 30) and it worked fine
There is no stub for 12, so i just left it there

The space gained back was only about 2%, so you're right, it really doesnt matter
I made a nand back-up before i stubbed them just in case, i forgot bootmii could tell you how much space was left

You better get a bigger SD card and put all your stuff in it and just forget about deleting IOS because that's crucial for the whole Wii. If you want to Brick your Wii, deleting your IOS's is the perfect way to do it. Don't do it and just get a new SD card. What you are trying to do is like having Windows or Mac OS and trying to delete some folders that you think are not useful. Try that and the same thing is going to happen to your OS LoL. Be careful and don't try to eliminate anything important like IOS or MIOS.

I have removed all non essential IOS's from my Wii for the same reason of trying to save some space but the amount of blocks you free up is negligable i think i saved about 3 blocks at most,

I cant remember the exact IOS's that are needed but you can safely remove any old system menu and wii shop ios's (you can use dop-ios to tell you which ones they are) and any that are stubs. its only the oldest system menu ios that is needed for some games which i think is 20 in theory you can remove 30 40 50 60 31 41 51 61 (if i remember my numbers correctly and assumign you have 4.2) but i did do research into what ios's are used for before i removed any using online lists frm wiibrew and another website that i no longer remember.

I havent bothered reinstalling any of them but i do also have the non menu shop korean ios's installed now adays.

Though if you just want to save space this will barley free any up.

As already mentioned, deleting an IOS will not give you ANY free space! IOSes are saved in a reserved space that you cannot use for anything. The people who said they gained space from deleting IOSes are wrong and plain and simply imagining things.

I was just in DOP-Mii updating my IOS's and the following are safe to delete (at least on a generation 1 Wii Running System Menu 4.2)

IOS60

And if you have System Menu 4.3 you should safley be able to remove IOS70
