Take this with several grains of salt for now. There was an announcement a while back that Activision was working on some kind of new Goldeneye game. Obviously everyone knows Goldeneye for its hit on the N64, a FPS. Now there's a new rumor that the new game is actually a remake of the N64 game, but RARE has already confirmed that they are not working on any Goldeneye games right now. This rumor was first just a survey email, unfounded so i didn't post it. Now the news comes from Eurogamer and they had this to say about it-

- GoldenEye title for Wii and DS
- due out this November
- may be a remake of the N64 title
- development split between Eurocom and n-Space

RARE also had this to say about the rumors-

"I can confirm that currently Rare are not working on a new Golden Eye game." - Rare spokesperson

I'm not sure if they can develop a remake without the original developers' permission though. At any rate, keep your eyes peeled for E3. May not be a remake at all.

Well I'm suspecting they'll make a remake, but not a disk game. Possibly a remake for Wii Ware. But activision, you can expect it to be overpriced.

Depends on whether Nintendo owns the content or not, I have no idea about rights but it was down to Nintendo who said no to a 360 Live release. Nintendo did pay for the license after all back then.

Activision would have allowed the license for a fee seeing that it would have been money for nothing for them (like how Ubisoft allowed TMNT Arcade game for VC).

Activision could have just asked Nintendo for rights to the content under the understanding that the game would be exclusive to Nintendo consoles.

My thoughts on this is that its true and Activision know their Bond games aren't that good and so leech off the popularity of an old game because GoldenEye is certainly not a great Bond film to warrant so many games. They're pretty much doing what EA did when they had the license only lazier as they're not even coming up with a new idea.

As far as I know the Goldeneye rights are up in the air as the James Bond License now belongs to Activision, Rare own the game and Nintendo own the publishing rights (I think) which is why its never been released on VC

For the DS? What?

IDK really. If they do it like they've done Rare's classics on the XBLA, then that's good. Perfect Dark on the XBLA is possibly better than the original, because it kept everything from the original but just improved the framerate, updated that graphics a bit (they're still fugly but they're using the original engine so...), made it dual analog, and added a ton of online features for everything. Oh, and they added Goldeneye maps and weapons for multiplayer. Yay.

I certainly wouldn't mind a remake for Goldeneye, but it depends on how it's done. Many fans of the original will cry bloody murder if even the slightest discrepancy is found.

Meh. I'll take this rumour with several truckload grains of salt. There's just too many hurdles to leap over for it to be anything like the classic.
Only possibility I see is Activision will make a brand new game without any features from the original and slap the Goldeneye name on it in the hopes that will sell, otherwise Rare would block it.

The team at RARE that worked on Goldeneye left RARE a long ass time ago and became 'Free Radical Design', the studio that brought us TimeSplitters/TimeSplitters 2/TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. Anyone that's played the first two games knows full well that they have Goldeneye mechanics stamped all over them. Now they've been bought by Crytek and are known as Crytek UK, and are working on (huge gasp here) TimeSplitters 4.

So even if there was a remake being done, and even if by some strange turn of events RARE was involved, it wouldn't be the same team anyway. Some new team of people would be handling it, and they really would have to do it from the ground up, because the original game is tied up in licensing purgatory.

(Has anyone actually gone back and tried to play Goldeneye lately? Take off the rose-coloured glasses, because it sucks hard! Talk about a game that simply didn't age well at all.

Can't say I was into it the first time it came out. Some levels were great but about 60% of the others were clearly filler. Mulitplayer was fun to some extent but in all being someone who played PC FPS games before this I can't say it was that great. For a console FPS it was done very well I do admit that but if it was on the PC at the same time then I'd doubt PC gamers would be clamouring up for it, pretty much like when Halo was released.

Not a PC fanboy myself, there are console FPS games I prefer to some PC ones.

Har, agree. I only played it a few times and I always got pissed because I couldn't shoot whoever picked the short guy.
.. or was that a different game?

I've never actually played the original Goldeneye lilsypha. And yes i know people will troll me for that. I've been meaning to play it lately, so i have no nostalgia glasses there when i judge it. Just posted this because of its enormous fanbase. I seriously doubt it sucks though, it has WAY too many fans for it to just downright suck.

Back in the day, it was fun in a way a lot of multiplayer shooters weren't. Playing it today though, is painful in a way a lot of other multiplayer shooters from back in the day aren't. Make more sense?

I got you then, so it hasn't aged well is what you're saying. Well i can understand that, i still want to try it for myself though. I kind of feel that the original Doom hasn't aged very well myself. Not that i don't still like it though.

even if this is true don't expect it to be like the original i've noticed shooters these days don't have that magic that they had back in the 90's

I still feel that Doom has a timeless quality.
