i woz thinking of getting my xbox traded in for a wii, but i need to know which is better - mod chip or softmod, what they do, and if it is worth it to trade. Will it be easy for me to download games and play on my wii like an r4?

Get a WODE. It's a modchip/hardmod with the same features as a softmod, but the WODE also has the ability to play GameCube games off a USB. It can't be detected by Nintendo because the Wii thinks the game is a original copy, so the WODE is future-proof.

You can even rip games with it, and in the (very) soon future it will have Internet Channel loading support, a bittorrent client (?) and Wifi streaming support

Yeah, but it's not the cheapest thingy on the market (£60 or so)

Well, Disadvantages of ModChips are that you need to buy it (ofc) and then open up your wii and install it.
For softmod, you'll only need an SD card, but you need to install some stuff (although that's not hard with a good tutorial

)
Also, when using SoftMod, you'll get access to all Homebrew, where ModChips "only" allow you to play backup games. (Unless you combine it with SoftMod).

I have a WODE and HBC etc, and there's also a large amount of WODE homebrew, like WODEFlow (WiiFlow), and some other homebrew stuff like WODEGX (USBLGX) and CFG WODE (CFG USB Loader). They work with the

Installed my WODE in 30 minutes, it's solderless

My Wii is softmodded, but basically this is how it works:

Soft mod - If you don't want to pay anything, but for some [popular] games, it could take a few hours for it to work.

Hard mod - If you don't mind paying money, and as far as I know, games always work.

Also, if your Wii breaks, with a hard mod, you are screwed (Opening it voids the warrenty). With a soft, I think (I'm really not sure) that you can wipe everything off it, and send it in.

And it's easier to soft mod a Wii than to install a mod chip as far as I know too (Maybe not the Wode).

You can also send your Wii with a WODE in, because it's solderless (and sits inbetween the Wii and the DVD) you could just remove the WODE and reinsert the original cables. Replace the feet, and it looks like it has never been opened

Looks like its never open, but still voids the warranty since it has been opened.

I dont think so, games like new super mario bros, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Wii Sport Resort etc... still need some tweaks here and there before it can be play.

right. So I M NOT GONNA GET A WODE cos it costs $160. I saw a "DriveKey2" for Wii. is that good? and a softmod will allow me to play commercial games from my SD.

Not true... perhaps for older chips and chips that can't use firmware updates. Wiikey2 has no problem with any of those games with the current firmware.

I wouldn't get the WODE because it only plays backup disks at 3x. Most other mods do the full 6x so what gives? If it weren't for that, I'd be interested... especially because of the NTFS support.

The 1 major advantage of (SOME) modchips:
- Riivolution (WiiKey2 is compatible)
The 3 major advantages of WODE/Sundriver:
- Riivolution
- GC USB Loading
- Harder to block

Kind of the same, but DS R4 = Wii Softmod isn't a good analogy.

R4: Hardware cartridge which allows the loading of ROMs. I don't believe the R4 overrides very much in the way of DS copy protection considering cartridges are harder to copy/pirate than disc media, but maybe it's just not as well advertised or doesn't seem as big an accomplishment as cracking the Wii (not that I think any less of the DS scene.)

Softmod: Software, modifies and replaces Wii system files and drivers to dupe the Wii's copy protection into accepting homebrew and burned media as legitimate programs.

If you have the time to invest and read up and learn about softmodding, keeping up with updates and new games that need workarounds if necessary, and are pretty confident in your "hacking" skills, then you shouldn't waste the money on hardmods, WODE or chip.

If you have money to throw at the problem and don't have the time to do all the reading and learning that's required with softmods, get a hardware solution.

One thing to consider, is that I don't *think* a DriveKey will allow you to load games via SD or USB, it's primarily to dupe the drive into accepting burned media. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) But there's nothing stopping you from installing Softmods along with the Drivekey in order to be able to load stuff from SD.

SoftMods:
+ Can do just about anything and everything (SD, USB HD loading, Sneek, GC)
- No GC USB loading, discs only (unlike WODE)
- Limited to 3X Read on burned discs
- Brick risk

DriveKey:
+ Hassle-free burnt media playing at full 6X read speed
+ No worries about updates breaking your softmods and leaving you high and dry until you fix it
+ Chip firmware updates ensure future workarounds
- May need to keep up with chip firmware updates
- Softmod knowledge/installation still almost essential for other various things anyways

WODE:
+ Hassle-free disc/usb playing with very little softmod knowledge
+ USB HD loading built-in
+ GC USB loading
- Limited to 3X disc read speed
- Relatively expensive

softmods can do everything except play game cube games from a harddrive and reads disks at 3x instead of the original 6x speed (hardrives read faster that 6x)..... so if use a harddrive for wii games and play game cube via disks ....... softmod it the way to go
