Gaming Unflashing to go back on Xbox Live

Since I've spent several hundreds of dollars on XBox Live I had always wanted access to my stuff. Now that I have two Xboxs that have been flagged as modded which held my XBLA content I don't really want a third. So after my last ban I went out to get a new 360, did a title transfer, sold my wifi adapter on Craigslist, and proceeded to mod my new 360 knowing I won't ever take that system back online.

I see people mentioning to flash your system back to stock to grab XBox updates then reflash. Does this really work?
Two things I've heard
1) The Nand chip records crap so going back to stock is a bullshit concept.
2) If you run your Xbox with no DVD Drive this gets recorded to the Nand chip for flagging.

Normally I do the "no video" cable trick but since I vowed to not go online with this system I kept the video cable plugged in as I dealt with my finicky Lite-On.

I'm 99% sure I won't go online especially since my next title transfer is available in June so I'll probably just but another Xbox and repeat my steps but I am curious to other's thoughts on the matter.

As I understand it you had a 360 with a load of DLC and XBLA you wanted but it got hit by a ban so you grabbed a new box and did the title transfer thing so you can now use it on that and now call that box an offline box. Somewhere along the line you modded said new 360 and that either has been flagged for a ban or you figure it almost certainly has.

The flash the drive back to stock things stems from a suggestion in the LT NFO to do it- such a suggestion has never been qualified though and while I can see updates switching to a debug mode or something like it that can be used to detect it that is wild theorising. It might also have to do with some fairly simple tests team-xecuter did last years during said bans where they tried modding then updating and updating then modding (accounting for copied and stock discs along the way).

1) That is a working theory.

2) That was another theory that got floated at some points.

I will mention option 2 though- find a JTAG box and have all the fun of Live aside from the playing of games online part.

As an aside though if you want updates there are offline methods http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemus...stemupdates.htm and we do also have methods of updating games for any xbox (not just a JTAG one) offline in http://xbuc.clanvids.net/ + your chosen method of accessing the HDD to stick the updates on there (there are many including the hard drive transfer tool).

Your almost 100% right, the new "offline" Xbox has never been online so it can't be flagged yet. I was questioning if the whole flash to stock thing would allow you to get detected seeing as it has never been online and now running stock. That is why I was questioning if the 360 really recorded to the Nand and is a method of detection.

My main reason for wanting to get back online wasn't for updates but possibly Sonic 4 and XBLA content that might have come out since Octoberish.

The JTAG option really appeals to me except I have fried two 360's now, (1 launch and 1 falcon) and now running two Jaspers. Now that I have so much time on my hands I often can go literally 20 hours at my Xbox without turning it off, and then sleep 5 hours to get back to my game for another 20. My Falcon was 8 months old and died after a Fallout 3 - three-day-athon. Jaspers are holding strong, had a solid 4 days of Dragon Age about two weeks ago and no problems. With all that being said to my knowledge Jasper JTAG systems don't exist as far as I know and if they do I am guessing hard as hell to find.

Just so it doesn't sound like I am some super bum, I usually go on these gaming binges about every other month. Rest of the time I game moderately and spend the rest of the time with my family away from the TV.

Game updates: download the latest (or whatever version you choose- only real reasons for going to an old version is for a certain bug or for system link play), they stack up so bug fixes from 2 should carry to 3 and so on.

You need some way to punt it to the drive-
Datel do something called the xsata
A JTAG 360 can access the drive (FTP a la the original xbox)
You can rip apart the drive and just connect up the sata leads to a PC- it is only a little laptop drive in there.
You can use the MS drive transfer device (MS give them away or your chosen online tat market will near enough provide you with one for lunch money).

Obviously some software is necessary- xplorer360 being the usual app of choice here. On partition 3 in the cache directory is where they need to be (the precise location name varies with the method you are using but in general partion 3 is the big one and the cache directory is on the root)

Every present model of 360 can be JTAG hacked- it is just the level of updates that have been done (every new one since mid June 2009 has been updated past the point of no return) that determine if a given 360 can be hacked. Assuming live is not your thing then yes a JTAG hacked Jasper is the most sought after 360 there is. If you will excuse me I shall again have to punch a wall for screwing mine out of becoming such a thing (swapped drives with an updated one and caught the update myself while trying to "save" it for the hacks). Hackable Jaspers are somewhat rare but they do still exist (the off game sections of big electronics shops surprisingly being a good source), finding a good deal on an already hacked one I will leave to you (the rip off merchants who do 360 DVD drives are nothing compared to some of these).
On the other hand I ended up buying a JTAG box (a nice 2007 box) and modding that somewhat to try and keep it cool and have it last (my pretty little box after the latest round of me messing around with it: http://gbatemp.net/pix/32303/360dvdext.JPG ), I know all things break but I hate this almost watching the clock thing the 360s have going on. My point though is the old ones are not all that likely to fall over- that one has seen some marathons courtesy of the many great games the last few months have seen released and that is a radiator you see in the background.

Back on topic as it were I would place very good money on the NAND storing a record of your misdeeds- see all the people that "only played copies offline" and still got hit in times past. I am assuming you went to 1.6 NS (the best "offline" firmware) or something like it rather than LT as well.
The question then becomes how long have I got if I do and in all truth all signs point to the ban wave as it were being "over" (enough to last you until next round- lasting through it is another matter entirely) and even if it was not it can take a few hours (enough for a quick grabbing session).
