'Sup Tempers?
I have a question for you people.
What electric guitar should I buy? I already have a cheap Strat, but the problem with that is that the sound it produces is crappy and gets out of tune very quickly. I was thinking about an Epiphone Les Paul or SG, I've tried them out at a friends, and I like the humbucker sound. For the record, he has also a Roland Cube amp.

Which models? Theres the cheap SG with two control knobs (don't recommend it), the popular and very good G-400, and the G-310, which I have.

Les Pauls tend to have more sustain, but on the lower end models, it might not be of importance.
If you're thinking of buying this one, don't.

Edit:Oh yeah, SGs have a thinner neck and its easier to reach the higher frets on them.

i have been using mostly ibanez guitars my whole life, (i also have and alvarez, but they are extrememly limited in electic) if you are going for a metal sound, ibanez and gibson are good choices. (epiphone has been pretty disappointing in my experience), but of course you gotta play alot before you find one that plays well with your style

if you're set on getting a cheap les paul, go for one of the cheaper copies. les pauls like the lp-100 or lp-special's or the starts aren't very good for the price. look for brands like agile, sx, samick/greg bennet. especially agile, you'll be getting something equal to the quality of a lp-standard for nearly 1/3 of the price.

my question is how much are you looking to spend?

My opinion having played guitar for the last 12 years is do not buy an epiphone as their all made in china now anyways...nor should you buy brands like BC Rich or Carlo Robelli(sam ash brand).

My suggestion for you is to buy used from craigslist or the like and take someone knowledgeable with you when you do, a few brands that I suggest are Schecter, Fender, Ibanez(not the cheap ones though), Gretsch or even yamaha(not the strat clones though).

I own a schecter and two fender american strats and a squire strat that actually says made in america on the headstock(I got the squire for free), I also own a Yamaha F310 Acoustic(which even though it's a cheap guitar it sounds great) and a Squire Acoustic(which also sound great despite being a cheap guitar) and have owned an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus(great looking guitar but it sounded like garbage), A BC Rich Mocking Bird(gave it to a friend who didn't own a working guitar), a squire II strat(that got stolen) and a piece of garbage no name les paul clone with a bolt on neck that my bro got for $25.

Honestly if you buy a lower end guitar it can sound pretty decent if you put good strings on it.....I'm not talking ernie ball slinkies, those are junk....get yourself some d'addarios or some DR's(I highly recommend DR's).

And change your strings at least every six months or more depending how much play time they get. if you play at least 2 -3 times a week change them every month.

I use D'Addario, changed them two months ago.

The one you like most.

I only have a cheap acoustic guitar, but go for the one you like most, both look and how it feels/plays.

Slinkies are fine, I always liked them better than DRs or D'Addarios. The main thing is that regardless of the brand, guitar strings have to be changed frequently. As soon as they get dirty the tone is gone.

Hint: wash your hands.

Actually DR's sound better and last longer due the the tighter winding method they use....they also retain their tuning better when using string bends and bend easier.

Onto the guitar....if you're looking to spend up to $275 USD you can get a fender mexican strat(used) or a schecter 006(Omen 6) for around that price...they both have a great sound for their price range....you might also be able to get an Ibanez(RG) or even an ESP for around that price and probably less used for the most part.

You might know this already, but here is the best way to string a guitar so it doesn't go out of tune easily. http://www.uncletim.com/setup.htm

And always stretch/bend your strings right after tuning and then re-tune, so that you can play a longer time without getting out of tune.

you could always consider buying a guitar with the floyd rose locking tremolo so that it doesn't go out off tune frequently due to excessive bends and too much torture to your strings.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
