Hacking Why do you hack your Wii?

Honestly, do you hack your Wii in order to play illegally obtained games?

Coming from someone that has hacked most of his consoles, (Wii, PS2, Xbox 1, DS (dead), DS Lite, and PSP. Nintendo 64, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance remain unhacked due to lack of need and lack of ability.) I generally hack the thing to enable increased functionality. Arguably they are used for pirating, but you can't ignore the increased functionality.

For example, on the PS2, it's very handy to have the media player for that. Using ESR, I can go up to most PS2's and just put in my memory card to allow it to play media from a USB device.

On the DS, using lameboy, I am able to restore the backwards compatibility that Nintendo has removed and am able to play Gameboy and Gameboy Color, saving a lot of space compared to carrying my gameboy collection. (And not to mention that I have the no-intro set of it, allowing more than I even had before.)

On the same DS, I can play most nes games with nesds. This is very handy since there are many NES titles I like despite not having owned a real nes.

On the PSP, I'm able to play Sega Genesis games and SNES games using the emulators when I go somewhere. (If I don't play them on my laptop, that is. I use the laptop when I can, but sometimes you can't carry that anywhere.)

On the Xbox, I can enjoy all kinds of emulators, more than even the Wii due to it's x86 architecture, and the wonderful media compatibility of XBMC. (Unfortunately it can't do HD or a lot of x264 media I have, but it does well with the power it has.)

And on the Wii, I'm able to emulate all kinds of systems. I'm also able to use Mplayer, and all kinds of good homebrew for the wii.

So it's not just about pirating. It also enables a lot more functionality.

Mostly this.

And I use the try-before-you-buy method. I only buy games that I think are worth playing, and mostly from third party developers. I try to share my money with the ones that need it the most, or who just make money on other ways. For example I didn't bought the Wii Sports Resort game. But only the WM+. So they still make money on the hardware. And when I need to choose to pirate a nintendo game, or a third party developer game, I pirate nintendo because they already make alot of money on the Wii's.

On this way I try to support the guys who need it so we can still enjoy a wide area of games entertainment.

I originally hacked my Wii for cheating using Ocarina, I didn't care about backup loading at the time. (My friend recently hacked his Wii for the same reason.) But now, with USB Loaders, I pirate a game now and then, not all the time because I have an 8GB SDHC card

none of your choices work for me. all the wii games suck so bad. but i had already paid $220 for the thing. So i hack it and now i can write software and see it run on the wii. i spend way more time dicking around and making little stupid programs and stuff than i do playing these crappily made games. i have at least 20 ISOs on my HDD of custom games because the originals needed improvements.

but for your report, you can tell people that i have torrented 15,000 roms, the whole GC NTSC collection and a couple hundred wii games.

None of the choices work for me either TBH lol... I enjoy tinkering with technology to make it better functionality/speed/whatever else. I spend way more time tinkering/hacking my technology stuff, xbox, wii, phone anything that i can make better i always do, even my PC lol. (Guess thats why im a computer science major lol)

The Wii Games ya i torrent them, but most of the games are so crappy... i would have been pissed if i spent money on it lol. But the ones i keep are mostly for others friends/family to play, i play a few of them but i wont lie and say i buy it if i like it cause i dont. Galaxy/Kart/Brawl/Prime Trilogy all good

VC... meh NO regrets here, i at one point pirated all there was out but have deleted almost every single one of them now, i owned most the original cartriages im not paying 10 more bucks for it.. much less i have already been playing them perfectly for years in HD 720P on my big screen via xbox, and even PC, plus Tantrics emulators are pretty refined now, its better in my opinion to use them. Since then ive tried to make it a complete rom list (USA) for all the systems to play cause i like completness, should be close if not 100%

Wiiware same thing, I've downloaded several wiiware packs, but after spending about 50$ on it and being mad every one of them SUCKED i pirate all them now, but for no real reason, as ive yet to find one ive enjoyed enough/had enough time to play more than once, though others play them on my wii.

All in all its a combination of everything why i hack my wii, am i too poor? not really, its just not worth how expensive it is in my opinion, if it came out of the box with all this functionality like Mplayer, emulators, open architecture/HDD loader etc it might be different but i love adding that functionality thats why i do it

Thanks for your responses guys. Keep her coming. It's interesting the different level of ethics everyone has on this issue.

I'm like the majority here. I love having the extra functionality. I've learned from the PS2 days that Lasers don't last very long, so being able to load games from HD is perfect. The next console they come out aught to have this feature as default. As for pirating games, I do it, but I feel like the old stuff (SNES, N64, NES, etc) Don't count as pirating, and if I really like the game, then I'm really inclined to buy it since I like having originals of the games I enjoy.

My wife on the other hand is totally against pirating. I don't know where she gets it. She yells at me whenever I tell her a game I'm playing is downloaded. She always threatens me saying if she catches me playing a pirated game, she'll go out and buy it (which would be bad, because then we'd have no money). Hehe, it's interesting people's different opinions.

Also, the poll is asking about if you have pirated stuff on your wii, the forum is asking why you hack your wii (sorry if that was confusing).

My reason for hacking my Wii is cause Nintendo refuses to let us do what we want with our game consoles.

- 1) We should be able to add a hard drive to our Wii
- 2) We should be able to run our purchased Wii games from a hard drive
- 3) The Wii Menu sucks compared to HomeBrew Channel and CoverFloader
- 4) You can do a lot more with your Wii once you Softmod it

Nintendo could improve the Wii if they would just work with the Nintendo comunity, but it seems they have no interest in doing so. Their attempt to force the 4.2 update on unsuspecting users who had WiiConnect24 turned on turned out to be a double edged sword as it had the effect of randomly bricking virgin Wii units as you can see from reading the forum here.

The only disk I own is the one that came with the console, but I have 50 or 60 on the HDD, all pirated.

If I couldn't hack the wii and play downloaded games I would never have bought a Wii in the first place so no one is losing money. In fact nintendo is still making money off me because as well as the console I have bought the wm+, we speak, extra wiimotes etc.

That said though I do spend a lot more time messing around hacking it than I do playing games.

Bought the Wii before knowing of the possibility of softmodding or something like that.

As I always in my poor life supported shareware I'll do the same thing with the Wii-Games I like to play.

If I need to buy all those shitty games an pay to much money for those I'd never buy any f*cking game...

Tried a lot of games, and bought only a few. Wii Fit (needed the Board and it's only bundled...), Raving Rabbids TV, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario.

There are some titles on my HD, but only play those few titles...

Other thing is the HomeBrew. My wife is playing Mahjongg, Mahjongg or Mahjongg every day...

And it's pretty cool to use a softmodded Wii...

i pirate cos games here are ridiculous prices $50+ plus i only end up playing most of them for up to a few hours or days before i get sick of them or they end up being SW or a bad game with flaws like shitty controls. i 1st got a chip installed than moved on to usb for faster loading times and so i can store all the ones i DO keep on 1 drive no ripping discs in and out and it also keeps the lasers life long.

This is one hell of a silly topic.

i miss the option: because i can.

If you could turn it around and ask the producers of games why the hell we should pay such incredible amounts of money for their piss poor PS2 ports each time you think that is valid as well ?

I own a 360 and find the that I'm often downloading demos of games before I buy them. This is a huge plus for the 360. I can play the first level of a new game and see if it's worth my $60, or if it's worth waiting for a price drop. The Wii doesn't have a hard drive (well out of the box at least) so downloading demos would be impossible.

I download Wii games because there is so much crap out there, and I can't try before I buy. Sure there's reviews of games and it helps but I need to make my own opinion from playing the games. Do I buy the games after downloading them for the Wii? Nope haven't yet, but I haven't modded my 360 to play burned games and download them. Maybe there would be less pirating if there were less crap, and demos available.

I also mod for the reasons already listed (retro games, slick looking USB loader) but I don't use it as a DVD player.

I chose: Hell yeah! Proud to be a pirate! Support free distribution! Why? Well, I could have also chosen: Yeah, I admit it, but it's because I'm poor. But to have fun should not cost! xD No good explanation directly, but it's free! xD

But I do what many do! Download it for free!
