I have to admit, I'm a bit frustrated with the combat right now, since I haven't figured out how to properly control my troupes and cast spells, but I sense something fun here. It brings me back to games I used to play in the early 90s. It's also bound to confuse the hell out of a lot of people. Can't imagine it being a big seller at retail.

Yeah like I was saying it reminded me of a watered down version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Nobunaga's Ambition, Uncharted Waters, etc. Which begs the question, why do we get this game and not any of those!

i do remember this was mentioned by hadrian and it was like a strategy turn or realtime based game of some sort tht was new for the ds

huh... i think we got a gimped out version of the game, just like it happened with valkyrie profile.
A quick look to the internals of the english rom reveals that the data/sound/voice folder is missing from the japanese version (about 20MB in voices).
Was looking forward to making an undub of this game...

Nope. No protection. I played as the NL Republic for HOURS yesterday on my iTouch, conquered 17 nations; not a single freeze, lockup, or even graphical glitch.
I do a have a problem, unless I set it to auto, I have NO IDEA how to cast spells/use skills. I click on them, and it shows you what they do...and no matter where I press, it won't use them. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

in battle, select one of your generals units. on the bottom left side of the touch screen is their portrait and some stats. you'll notice theres three blocks by 'sp' and and large bar underneath. by fighting enemy units, the bar will fill up. once the bar fills up once, you get one sp point. you can have a max of 3 sp points. on the bottom right is your list of skills. touch one to show its details. now notice by the side 'lv#'. the lv skill you want to cast is determined by how many sp points you have. say you have 1 sp point so far, you can only choose lv 1 skills. have 2 sp points and you can choose lv 2 skills.
as for the game, its not bad to be honest. the combat is abit lacking; you just don't get enough of it and they don't last very long. theres lots of silly stuff such as having tons of gold but nothing to spend it on apart from building defense (which doesn't spend alot of money) and makes the trade feature abit redundant.

nice, found a workaround on ez flash vi, setting game-config for soft-reset to "Mode 2"

This game is like Total War, redisigned to DS, japanised (with class C story) and simplecized tactic and economy to things that even 3 year old can understand (that is, fight is rock->paper->scissor and economy is random numbers that you move around, it is impossible to screw). What you see on trailers is just everything this game has to offer, I was hoping for something much better :S.
The game is good but the touch controls are really lacking. The second unit is often stuck by the first one and there is a delay for moving.

I take it that it's not possible/darn hard to to restore the voice acting? I tried out the Japanese version months ago and thought there was something weird about the EU release as I had a faint memory of hearing voice acting in the japanese.
Guess the publisher was too cheap to pay for the voice acting rights. If they cant be added later on I guess we can only hope the NA publisher wont make the same mistake.
As for the game and characters, a lot of story/character connections are lost if you havent played any of the previous games from Idea Factory.
